Maidana has the right STYLE to beat Mayweather, just not the right SKILL level.

If you break down boxing to its fundamental roots, this match up is a boxer vs a volume puncher.

Unless you're a superior boxer, and sometimes even then, volume punching is the best strategy to utilize against a boxer. You attempt to win the fight with a volume of punches and especially work to the body.

Unfortunately, there are two factors working against Maidana even if he obtains the desired amount of conditioning.

    A) A likely biased refree

We all know that Kenny Bayless will likely jump in at any point Floyd looks vulnerable to restart the fight and diminish any of Maidana's success. This plays a signficant factor because Maidana's best and more than likely, only chance, is to beat Floyd on the inside with a volume of punches.

If Bayless breaks it up as soon as Maidana manages to get inside, Maidana will have to restart the process which requires a great deal of initial energy and also risk being hit as he closes the distance.

This is an unfair advantage for Mayweather along with the glove issue.

    B) Maidana lacks the skill necessary to beat a boxer of Mayweather's level.

At the end of the day, Maidana's attacks are barbaric. He doesn't utilize stance switching to hit Mayweather with unexpected shots. He doesn't shift his position enough, and he loops his punches, often shooting them at Mayweather's head.

Granted, Maidana is reported to have worked on shooting his shots to the body in training, it's very difficult to make such a signficant tranisition in one fight.

At the end of the day, I think it will be an initially entertaining fight, but will get more and more frusterating as Bayless continues to interrupt the action, and Maidana inevitably tires.

More than likely, the fight will resemble the first one, but Mayweather will be voted a decision.

    Hopefully the undercards are alright.

Funny wasn't it Pacroid who had a fight scheduled when Floyd was supposed to go to jail but when the judge delayed his incarceration Pac and Arum had a whole slew of excuses.

If you throw out a big enough net, anyone can catch a fish.

30 more seconds on the 3rd round and the unbeatable Floyd money Mayweather would be 46-1, thats a fact.

Maidana couldn't beat Floyd because he didn't have the right ref, gloves, ring, OSDT testing, judges,...I wouldn't be surprise if Maidana was made to wear a thong during the fight.

Totally agree even though the result is out already. This is an excellent thread with an analogy I always agreed with. Maidana's style, which is the all-out wild and aggressive style IS the style to trouble and beat Mayweather. This type of style makes Mayweather uncomfortable and never gives him a chance to relax and build up a rhythm. Mayweather almost immediately takes over and relaxes when his opponent poses in the middle of the ring(Alvarez, Baldomir, Maidana II(unfortunately), Cotto(even though he fought the right style, he was also forced to pose at some points to conserve energy and allowed Mayweather to take over), DLH(Fought the right style as well but couldn't keep it up), Ortiz, Mosley, Judah(after successfully gassing in three rounds), Chavez...etc. Just watch how Castillo fought him in the first fight, he was all over him nonstop and forced it to be a close tough fight. It's not really easy to apply this type of strategy and style against Mayweather but those that can will always give him trouble. I give two fighters(in Mayweather's era) a chance to beat him. Paul Williams has a 60% chance over Mayweather's 40% and Pacquiao in 2009-2011 would be a 50/50 fight.

This discussion is based on Mayweather in his prime(I've said the same exactly thing analyzing a style that could trouble or beat Mayweather in 2005 and 2006 minus the Paul Williams and Pacquiao addition obviously). Obviously and clearly he's not in his prime anymore which is why Maidana had his moments in the first fight.
