This weekend on HBO/Sky Sports we have an intriguing Boxer Vs. Puncher match up between Argentine Brawler Marcos Maidana and skilled boxer Devon Alexander.

    Fight Info:

    Date: Saturday, Feb 25th 2012

Location: St. Louis, Missouri. Home of Alexander.

Television: HBO ( USA ), Sky Sports ( UK )

Notable Undercard: Adrien Broner Vs. Eloy Perez, Deontay Wilder Vs. Marlon Hayes, Sharif Bogere Vs. Sergio Rivera, and prospects Kieth Truman/Eddie Gomez in easy undercard bouts.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marcos Maidana Vs. Devon Alexander: This fight is an extremely interesting Boxer Vs. Puncher match up. Maidana is obviously the puncher and Alexander the boxer. Maidana has power, and comes out brawling but I do not see him as a 1 punch knock em' out cold knockout artist. He is a " brawler ". He can break down and stop his opponents often. His style has also made some really exciting fights such as Morales-Maidana which was a FOTY candidate,. Alexander on the other hand is the superior boxer, He has the skill to outbox Maidana as long as he doesn't get caught in a brawl. He also has a hometown advange, Which knowing how fights like Alexander-Matthysse went may mean Maidana can't win on cards, Literally.

Keys to victory for this would be for Maidana: Don't let it go to the cards and make him brawl. If you let him use his boxing he's gonna take rounds, something you don't need in St. Louis, Maidana has to press the action from round 1, Make sure Devon is out of his comfort zone. For Alexander: Don't get lured in to a slugfest as you are the weaker fighter, Try to keep good range and outbox Maidana.

How I see it going: Maidana lands the harder shots. Scores a knockdown but gets outboxed around half the fight by Alexander. Maidana looses a split decision that many thought he won. Alexander SD 12.

Note: In a fight like this I don't count out anything. Maidana could stop him but he could also get 100% outworked and outboxed. All depends.

Adrien Broner Vs. Eloy Perez: This is an underrated match up. Broner has the skill to win but Perez also has great boxing skills, I have seen him on " Solo Boxeo Tecate " many times. But then again Broner has fought the tougher opposition, He scrapped Jason Litzau in 1, Won a controversial decision to Ponce De Leon that I thought Ponce won. While Perez's best win is journeyman Ira Terry! So clearly this is his coming out party. His career defining fight. He needs to win or put up a great fight to get the recognition from casual fight fans he deserves. But I doubt he can do that, He'll give Broner trouble but still loose a close but clear decision I think. He'll get " out slicked " lmao.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Undercard info: No intriguing match ups in the deeper undercard but some real hopeful prospects. The exciting Sharif Bogere is among them facing tough southpaw journeyman Sergio Rivera. Exciting american heavyweight KO artist Deontay Wilder is once again facing a light opponent in Marlon Hayes, Wilder has won KO's in all of his 20 bouts! He has potential but he needs to step up to get exposed or get hyped! Another KO artist Eddie Gomez is on this card in an easy bout too.

Good night on HBO! I hope to get breakdowns for Cleverly-Karpency and Huck-Povetkin soon.

Impossible... Alexander made it so the fight would be over 10 rounds! Very obvious why of course. It shrinks Maidana's chances conciderably.

    WAR MAIDANA :ibutt

    nice preview.

i agree with you especially on the maidana being more of a brawler than a ko artist especially with top level fighters.

though id say unlike most people i think alexander is going to pull a slight upset and completely outbox maidana (though im rooting for maidana)

should be a good fight either ways

I was leaning towards Maidana but I've changed my mind. With the fight being 10 rounds and in St. Louis it seems Alexander has a couple nice advantages right from the start. These two are on a similar level but I think those advantages will help Alexander here. Alexander by decision.

Although these are two very good fights I found myself unexcited by them (in terms of what I should be) but the last couple of days have me hyped to bits and I can't wait.

I got Alexander SD also but I'm still weighing up a change to Maidana, i believe he could KO him and I feel that even in St Louis should Maidana win comfortably they would second guess screwing him after gifting him Kotelnik and Matthysee (certainly not writing it off though).

And Broner wide UD cause Broner a g.

    :lol::yep

But honestly, 10 rounds, ST louis. Maidana mostly outbrawls, not stops most top guys, Cayo and Ortiz were good but not as good as Alexander ( At the time for Ortiz ). With it only being 10 rounds Alexander has less of a chance of gassing and even if he did if he outboxed him early he still wins via close gift!

I get you SS and agree with what your saying.

I got Alexander SD in my picks but I'm reluctant to write Maidana off as I have done this before and he proved me wrong. I think Alexander should be able to outbox him but I'm not sure if he can hold up if he gets in trouble.

The ten rounder suits Alexander in terms of limiting Maidana's KO chances but it can hurt him as well as it nearly (and should have done) against Matthysee. mathysee scored two 10-8 rounds (imo) and had it been elsewhere he would have surely lost.

If Maidana can score a couple of KD's then there is a chance it could backfire. I still fancy Alexander but I'm still weighing everything up.

Nice straight to the point breakdown SS.

Alexander 7-3 UD & Broner 10-2/9-3 UD for me.

Would be funny if A) Perez made it a close fight but lost a wide UD, and B) Garcia snapped at the post-fight interview in the ring when Broner gets Pops to brush his hair one time.

And by snapping, I mean pulling some Butler-like **** to knock Broner the **** out.

    Maidana TKO8
    Broner KO4

Any result out of the main event would not surprise me. Especially since it's their first fight up at welterweight...

Maidana has always been over rated to me. He has a ton of heart and is tough as nails. People shouldn't get it twisted though. Yes Alexander had a hard time with Matthysse, but Maidana isn't Matthysse, Matthysse, actually has decent boxing ability and footwork to go along with power and a chin, which also caused Zab Judah some problems. Maidana has no boxing ability or footwork, and the last time that Alexander fought a brawler with bad footwork, he KO'd somebody who was said to have an iron chin. Alexander should outbox Maidana comfortably. Watching Maidana get buckled by an old Winning Glove wearing Eric Morales, you have got to think that if Alexander gets comfortable enough to sit down on any punches, he should be able to put Maidana on the canvas. On the flipside, Alexander showed a hell of a chin taking flush shots from Matthysse for 12 rounds during their fight. I think the new weight class, should if anything make Alexander's cardio a little better and make him even more durable.

Nice breakdown, I also see Alexander pulling out a decision and many of the "but Maidana was coming forward" type comments.

Broner seems to have more tools in the shed than Eloy.
