Main Events: What ever happened?

    Seems like the franchise died when Gatti retired.

    This was once a proud promotional outfit that also once housed star fighters in their prime like Evander Holyfield, Pernell Whitaker, and Fernando Vargas, and young prospects like Juan Diaz and Kermit Cintron.

    Most of their shows were based in Atlantic City, and with the shift of power to Vegas this decade, it might have had something to do with it.

    About 15 years ago the power struggle in North American boxing was between Don King Productions, Bob Arum's Top Rank, and Main Events.

    King made a fatal error in hoarding heavyweights in an era where they were terrible and the only two that mattered (the Klitchkos) were signed by someone else.

    Then besides a small jump for up-and-comers in recent years like Lou Dibella's DBE (after he left HBO), Goossen-Tutor, and Gary Shaw Promotions, it seems like all the aforementioned promotional companies are in a downturn except for two:

    Golden Boy and Top Rank.

    Golden Boy has all the advantages in terms of capital, but Top Rank's braintrust has kept them in the game. But for how long?

    Don King is getting old, as is Bob Arum. Golden Boy will come out clear first once those two leave the picture. The figureheads are all that remain. Once they are gone, it's Golden Boy.

    Main events was Duva's outfit. Lou is up in years, and I believe his son passed on a couple of years ago. No one really to keep the business going.

    Just think in 2002 they had Lewis, Vargas and Gatti, those are 3 huge moneymakers right there.

    She is running it now, and yes I think finkel was also running with them. But Lou was the driving force, signed alot of the olympic fighters, and also brought in George Benton as his top trainer.
    They were a tough team to beat.

    More like running it into the ground. I haven't seen a Main Events banner hanging from the rafters on an HBO, Showtime, or even ESPN2 event in a long time.

    Benton was the man. The most underrated trainer ever with the exception of Jesse Reid.

    Actually, promotions-wise Dan Duva was the driving force. Main Events is not the same without him. Dino, (apparently) being a poor substitute.

    I strongly agree about Benton.....however, may I ask why you rate Reid so highly? I've worked with him (a bit) before and although he seems a decent guy....I, for one, have never been overly impressed with his training. Perhaps you know something I do not.
