All Makabu did was win the lottery. He has now to try and sell the fight so of course he says he will KO Canelo, when he has no intention of doing that. He was chosen for a reason...
This could be an interesting fight if Makabu turns up motivated... 190 pounds is only a few pounds under his optimal weight, so he isn't going to be weight drained. People can say all they want, but this would be a significant difference in natural size... how many 5 foot 7 fighters have won a world title at cruiserweight?
I've asked several forms of this question to several posters in several threads and I've never gotten a good answer. It makes me think there's some other boxing out there where everything is done the right way. Well, there is the super flyweight division. Maybe everyone is focused on them.
To be fair, when debating boxing, it's pretty smart, to never admit your favorite boxer. Strong move!
Makabu is a legit guy in my book. If Canelo pulls it off, I will give him credit. I don't think he will.
Makabu never weighs 200 even though he can. What does that say to you? That he doesn't cut a lot of weight, therefore 190 should be no problem.
185? It's not going to be at 185. If it's at 190 it will be due to the WBC following through on their plan to lower their Cruiserweight limit to 190 as they announced last year. After announcing that one year ago, they haven't confirmed anything about when the new limit would be made official and Makabu hasn't fought since last December. This is going to be a big storyline and a lot of speculation about whether it'll be at 190 or 200, and Canelo haters will use this as an opportunity to claim that Canelo is somehow trying to force him down to 190. But we know for a fact that it was the WBC's plan to change their Cruiserweight weight limit to 190, it would make sense for that to be motivating factor for Canelo to decide to take this fight, but thus far it remains a mystery as to whether this is being planned for 190 lbs or 200 lbs. I wouldn't be surprised if it was at 190 given their announcement last year, but that remains to be seen. One thing that makes me think that maybe the WBC got second thoughts about lowering the CW limit to 190 is that when Bridgerweight was announced they had a graphic that says Bridgerweight is between 200 lbs - 224 lbs. So that indicates that they haven't offically changed the CW limit to 190 lbs yet, otherwise Bridgerweight would be advertised as being between 190 lbs - 224 lbs. I just want to make it clear that I'm only OK with this bout being at 190 lbs if the official limit is in fact changed to that per the WBC. I don't want to see any kind of catchweight shenanigans here. If the WBC decides to change CW to 190 lbs, and they announce it officially then that's where this bout should be fought at. If they decide to keep it at 200 lbs, than that's where it should be fought at. The weight shouldn't be part of the negotiations between Canelo and Makabu, it should be fought at whatever the WBC CW limit is, and that is up to the WBC and the WBC alone. I would hope that Sulaiman is asked about the weight limit situation at CW by some media ASAP so we're not left wondering or speculating about what weight this is gonna be at for the next couple of months.
