Well rightly or wrongly he was seen as the best of the bunch when he fought Johnson.

Allow me to clarify. I said Willard, Jim Johnson, and O'Brien were Jack Johnson toughest opponents, meaning they gave the champion his toughest matches.

Does anyone think Louis, Dempsey, Marciano, Ali, or Holmes struggles this much vs the same cast of title opponents?

Hard to say.

Do they break their arm against Jim Johnson due to an injury sustained in a previous wrestling match. In that situation they would be doing well to pull out the win even under no decision rules.

O'Brien is always likley to be an interesting asignment in a six rounder. That is not verry many rounds to catch a verry elusive fighter. How many defensive fighters would have put him away?

Willard is always going to be an interesting proposition in a finish fight if you are 37. If you put the Holmes of the Spinks fight in there is he going to be able to put Willard away before he runs out of gas?
