The word Superheavyweight doesn’t officially exist in pro boxing but The size of fighter does. SHW exists in all other martial arts and in Amateur boxing itself. The Olympics etc. It’s only pro boxing that got it wrong.

There is a lot of stuff that dosnt officially exist in pro boxing that we accept like linear champions. It is not an official title.

There is a lot pro boxing got wrong. Calling heavyweights up to 190 then 200lb cruiserweights was wrong. They should have introduced Superheavyweight instead.

Does Cruiserweight really exist? Isn’t it heavyweights as they used to be? If the existed before why did they need a new name? The 230lb guys were the new ones.

Heavyweights have always been an unlimited division.

You aren't the baddest man on the plan if you are not allowing anyone the feasibility of challenging for your belt.

Exactly. For 100 years 190 was big enough to dominate the unlimited division. Then modern advances not previously achievable allowed a previously unsuitable size of men to dominate the unlimited class. Once fighters had to be beyond that, eventually 230, in order to dominate you had a new weight class.

When it happened in Amateur boxing they kept heavyweight the same and created Superheavyweight.

A HW champion is not the champion if he's not allowing bigger men than he to challenge for his title.

The HW champion isn't supposed to be some romanticised 190 pound sized fighter. He is simply the hardest man on the planet.

Not the hardest man on the planet (except those who are above 230).

I accept what you are saying. I just think the 230 bracket eventually became harder to beat. When it came harder to beat, that was the new cut off for an unlimited weight class within the unlimited class. It created itself. I get what your saying about hardest man on the planet. I think the passing of the torch moment was when a new class created itself because within that part of the division was something that was new. And they became the harder to beat hardest men in the planet. The new guys. Now you can check the stats on the champions to find out exactly when it started but everything changed right after that. This was when comparisons became harder With previous heavyweight champions because regardless of them being an official thing they -these new guys- were legitimately there.

Deontay Wilder is in the argument for being number 1 right now and weighed below 220 in his last two fight.

Let’s see if he starts a trend. He could just be anecdotal evidence.
