Crazy night of boxing to be sure but lets try to make sense of this circus. 1.Ortiz threw a ridiculously blatant lunging headbutt that was completely unnecessary. People have told me that it was a heat of the moment type of thing but i disagree, if you look at earlier rounds you will see that Victor was very aggressive and very reckless with his head. 2.Floyd hit Victor with two brutal shots while Victors hands were down after a seemingly accepted apology. When i saw this live i thought Cortez was going to either deduct points from Floyd or DQ him, which brings me to my next point. 3.Watching live I did not see Cortez tell the fighters to start boxing and was very surprised to see Joe count Victor out. Reports say that Cortez did signal the fighters to continue albeit very poorly. In my opinion all three are to blame for the ridiculousness that this fight devolved into. But the biggest **** up belongs to Joe Cortez, if he would have made it clear that the fight was ready to continue then everything would have been alright, but instead we get more proof that he is completely shot as a referee and should not be allowed to ref any more major fights.
Don't waste your time. Both fighters were unethical. Ortiz started it and Mayweather ended it. I was hoping for a full fight and maybe a chance for Ortiz to gain experience. All we saw were dirty fighters and Mayweather being better at it. Rewind your DVR. cortez was busy talking to one of the ref on the floor to deduct the point, Ortiz was coming forward to apologize to floyd and glanced at Cortez. Cortez shifted his eyes but it was too late Ortiz already got KTFO.
After seeing replays i see cortez wave the fighters together, floyd is ready to fight ortiz hugs Floyd, Floyd doesn't really hug back. This is key imo Cortez, after waving the fighters together never says box or dose the box hand sign, he says something about the bell i think. Ortiz is focused on Mayweather gets hit with a left hook, looks at Cortez then gets hit with a right hand that he did not see coming. I still think that this was caused primarily by Cortez for not clearly resuming the action and by Ortiz for starting this mess with that ridiculous headbutt.
