Generally you hear about the top guys having 8-12 week training camps, would depend on the fighter though Carl Froch keeps himself close to the weight at all time, so wouldn't need as long but Ricky Hatton would have needed a very long camp because he would have to shift the weight, then get into condition.
Hatton was surprisingly fit even when he entered camp almost 20kg over fighting weight. Scott Harrison used to have to kill himself everyday for 8-10 weeks to make weight and even then the last 5days or so was basically a fast!
They say you should only be at fight weight for a short period of time , Morning of weigh in most skip or run off the last couple of pounds pre weigh in then hydrate back up to a nominal weight unless under IBF rules ,Ive discussed this with Billy before and he prefers his fighters holding weight for sparring during camp then tapering of in the final week
Ideally the first day of a camp the fighter shouldt be eating and drinking correctly, along with the training they do weight should be made within reason quite comfortably. The problem is purely down to the fighters professionalism if they eat when they shouldn't there going to struggle and believe me there's plenty who cheat then everybody bar them gets the blame, I've notice a common fault in many boxers the inability to accept blame or take responsibility
Agreed billy too many get outs nowadays and too much interference with the i need a SnC Coach and a dietician/nutritionist , guys have been making weight for years on hard graft and eating properly of whole clean foods and good training schedules of there boxing work endurance work building stamina with there running and strengthening the core with good old fashioned circuts
not my fighters but I've know fighters to lose much more than 7lbs with 3 weeks to go. A wee word of advice no boxer tell the truth about there weight coz it's nobodies business other than theres
To be fair Billy it is only a rumour, no idea as to the truth and not from Tommy himself so needs taking with a pinch of salt. I was more interested in when the ideal time to make weight was to be honest.
What weight do you think Manny and Floyd walk around at? I think they are pretty close to it? Also they used to say Bernard Hopkins never got above 165 when he campaigned at middle. These maybe are myths to elevate their already supreme status in the sport but who knows????
My old fella was a bantamweight back in the 60's. He always said that doing the weight was the most traumatic experience of his life, specially for title fights.
