And emerged victorious!! It was a very close fight I must have scored it ten times and never had him losing - but margins of three points are a bit much from two of our judges. I had it 114-112. You fail to mention that P4P Collazo is miles better than Paulie :deal
oh yeah thats it! everytime i mention collazo its always "but it was a very close fight that i scored.....":rofl
What top 10 contender has he beat? He beat N'dou who was given the belt after Malignaggi was stripped of it ... There are so many guys that can beat Malignaggi in the 140lb division it makes no sense. He's not the number #1 contender ... he hasn't beaten anyone to get that kinda clout. I'm sure its just to further hype of the match between he and Ricky Hatton ... but Hatton is the champion and bigger fights can be made with him ... i'm sure that even though Malignaggi has a belt - he's being brought in as the opponent and will be set up to get beat down. I've been going back and fourth on this but I think that Malignaggi just doesn't have what it takes to fight a world class fighter like Hatton ... who's been in the ring with waaay better opposition.
I'm a Paulie fan, but here's what's happened: he's living off a streak of popularity he eared over a year when he lost but fought bravely against Cotto, then looked on top of his game in two televised fights against B-level opposition. Larry Merchant once said he never trusted a fight who made their name off a loss (see Ruddock, Razor and Golota, Andrew among others). What happened is that Paulie became a feel-good story by gaining respect by fighting hard and above expectations against Cotto. In his next fights he showed the same skills he was supposed to always have but few people had seen. So in the span of a year, Paulie went from a quick boxer that not many had seen and ran his mouth to someone who had slick skills AND was tough as nails. That's how he got where he is now. Unfortunately, it's looked like in his last 2 fights that the total package is more of a B+ rather than an A.
Perhaps - Torres can bang, whilst Paulie is very hittable these days. Hatton will show him up for the fraud that he is in November - mark my words.
After Saturaday's fight, Malignaggi no longer holds the title as the most overrated fighter at 140. Everyone can now see that he isn't a very good fighter, and he will probably be rated more accordingly from now on. Ironically, I now believe that Hatton has assumed the mantle as the most overrated fighter at 140. Hatton looked sloppy on Saturday, and made a lot of mistakes. Malignaggi just simply wasn't good enough to capitalize. Hatton has been carefully matched pretty much his whole career, and that trend continued this past Saturday. I suspect Hatton will never fight Torres, Holt, or Bradley. They represent too much risk for not enough reward. The same may be true for Kotelnik, but I've never seen him fight.
Wow, I was harsh as hell on him looking at this thread Hmmm...didn't look far wrong on Saturday night.
Maggs is as overrated now as he was the night that he fought Cotto..I feel that people and the HBO crew last night did hatton a disservice by downplaying the win and talking Paulie down. After his fight with Cotto people were talking about how brave he was and how he put up such a great fight and how his future was so bright. He loses to hatton and all of a sudden he is a over rated bum, that doesnt belong on the top level of boxing??? I still think that Paulie would beat alot of fighters at 140 some top guys.
Well, I pegged him as overrated way before the Hatton fight. And I don't see Paulie beating any of the top fighters at 140.
