Or Broner vs Burns for June 15th. Said Dickie Schaefer. Malignaggi one would be at Welterweight apparently. Boxing Opinions ‏@BoxingOpinions1 Richard Schaefer says Broner will either return on June 15th against Ricky Burns or 22nd against Paulie Malignaggi!
147 for the WBA title. I noticed Broner isn't keen on fighting Vasquez for whatever reason he only wanted the Burns fight. Just got told a minute ago and replied ''wow'' . Didn't expect this one but may not happen just rumored.
Both Golden Boy fighters but Paulie just savaged HBO and they have Broner. Paulie is up for it though (interview at the scene) I can't blame Broner for not wanting Vasquez. Him and Abril might have belts but they are horrid. I didn't like Burns fighting Vasquez either because he is so sore on the eyes.
It's still a rumour, going on what Doug Fischer of Ring TV is saying. I don't really see any real point to it for either man. Paulie, while eminently beatable, is the sort of guy who'll make Broner look bad simply because he's got decent footwork. As he gets more stationary, Broner will start teeing off on him - specially since Paulie can't punch - but it's an odd choice. It seems odd to skip 140 as well, when there are lots of good matches to be made if Broner doesn't want to stay at 135. Garcia, Matthysse, Judah, Khan, Rios would all be fights that couldn't fail to deliver drama - and four of those guys bring much more to the table that Paulie. (Incidentally, I do realise Rios won't be going there any time soon due to the TR/GBP feud - but I'd LOVE that fight. We'd see just how good Broner is with a guy who can out-muscle him and isn't easy to dissuade).
Broner's smart. He knows Vazquez has all the things he struggles with: good movement, sharp jab, taller, slightly longer reach and willing to stink the joint out to take a decision. Abril would just nullify Broner on the inside all night, lose a decision, but show up some of The Problem's limitations. Burns, while capable of beating Broner, has a style that favours Broner somewhat.
I think Broner beats Vasquez but as you said he'll stink the joint out like he does in every fight. Not the type of fight that you would want for a young guy you are trying to build. At the least, Burns is going to be an entertaining fight.
Why is Broner skipping the 140lb division? He still makes 135lb comfortably, so you'd think he'd wait around to fight either Burns or Vazquez but if he was going to move up, you'd have thought he'd go for a title at 140 rather than skip straight ahead to 147. I guess Malignaggi doesn't bring much threat but still, Broner should be looking out for tough challenges rather than the easiest option above him. At least the Burns/Broner saga is done with anyway.
