i agree with you on maidana. there is no proof that he carries the same power to 147 as he was absolutely schooled by devon and his two recent KO's are worthless to someone that is trying to handicap him.

Good fight for both. Each one has been on a comeback-type trail fighting good but not great fighters in their last bouts. I feel Maidana is fresher and more offensively capable than Paulie is defensively sharp, I favor Maidana.

 

You're both completely missing the point. You're speaking in generalizations, which I'm not.

You're both arguing against a position none of my posts have put forth.

I'm not saying "Maidana whooped Martinez, so he therefore beats Malignaggi". I'm not even saying "Maidana whooped Martinez, so that tells us the complete story about him at welterweight". Nothing of the sort.

There are some things that can and should be measured correlative to the quality of the opponent.

If I was talking about Maidana's power, for instance, it would be silly to suggest that smashing Martinez was all that significant an indicator of his WW power. Obviously tougher guys like Soto Karass and Alexander are going to handle his power better than someone like Martinez.

If I was talking about his ability to land a high percentage cleanly, obviously a Malignaggi is going to evade more of those shots than someone like Martinez.

If I was talking about Maidana's defense, obviously mentioning how little he got touched by a scrub like Martinez is irrelevant.

Again, some things - like those above - you measure in correlation to the quality of opponent. Some things, however, don't need to be and shouldn't be. Some things can be viewed on their own, without regard to context. Namely, the areas I was referring to pertinent to Maidana having begun to show improvements since moving up. The actual mechanics of his punches are subject to analysis whatever the target is, and are not conditionally influenced by it. Any time Maidana throws a punch - no matter what or whom @ - you can analyze how straight and how fundamentally correct it is.

So commenting on the mechanics of his offense looking sharper than in his two preceding efforts at 147lbs in no way suggests that Martinez is anything more than he is nor does it speak to Maidana's overall effectiveness. There were areas of concern, namely that he was slapping away with a high volume of sloppy arm punches (and these concerns predated his move up) and it was undeniably evident against Martinez that he threw straighter and sharper punches...which has nothing at all to do with the fact that it was Martinez.

Does that mean that Maidana has completely subdued his flaws and is now ready to conquer the world at welter? No. It means that a particular ongoing area of concern has been addressed in the gym and shown in actual practice in a live competition - even if it was a squash match that didn't tell us much of anything else.

His chances against Malignaggi are considerably better if he keeps applying those improvements rather than regressing to energy-wasting sprays of arm punches. Do we know for a fact that he can sustain those improvements against someone better than Martinez? No, there isn't any way to know that yet until he does it. The fact is, he did show them at least once in the ring and that is an encouraging sign for Maidana if he wants to collect a belt from Malignaggi or anyone else.

 

In depth technical wisdom is all well and good, but the fact is that the biggest improvements Garcia has made for Maidana is a jab, and a small element of subtle craft.

All of which are useless because Paulie is so much more advanced in terms of both.

 

He certainly won't be looking to outbox Paulie.

He'll be looking to land flush shots on him, which most of Paulie's high level opponents are able to do in spite of his alertness, quickness, ability to perceive shots coming and cover his escape with flash-grenade counters, and occasional flirtation with slick head & upper body movement. His defense is pretty good, but nobody's ever considered him untouchable. Now, if Maidana were winging sloppy bull**** all over the place there's a chance Paulie could very well make him look foolish playing the matador. If Marcos stays committed to throwing sharp, carefully selected, well-placed and powerful punches traveling a short distance to the target - then it's going to be a rough night for Paulie and perhaps yet another prolonged ass-kicking.

Maidana's problem has never exactly been that he's slow, he's just had a tendency to go hog wild in the past. Recently he looks to have calmed down a bit offensively and work in a more disciplined manner. His aim will still be to cause damage rather than get cute and box with Malignaggi - but there's a right way and a wrong way to go about doing that. The Maidana of old would've gone about it the wrong way. Currently, he seems to be rectifying some of his bugaboos without coming totally out of his style.

 

Agreed. For a slickster, Paulie takes too many flush shots.

One thing that is important is that for me, 147lbs has given Malignaggi his legs back. Though I'd actually expect that to be plan B. I think he'll go for a similar game plan to how he fought Diaz. Box from the pocket, and use his lead shoulder to create space.

As far as Maidana goes, you're right again there's a sort of refinement there, rather than a change. He takes a breath, and channels his anger into a more calculating attack. If he wrings his punches wide, then he'll get battered down the middle, as an old Morales showed is likely.

 

Maidana can take this is he focuses on the body early.
