Terrible business all round. Such a waste. Would've loved to see Sutherland in the mix with groves and degale. Horrible thing for Maloney to go through as well :-(

Ive said it before but Sutherland was the greatest talent Ireland has ever seen and could have been a rival for Andre Ward in a couple years if he was still around. His passing is terribly sad and a great loss to our sport may he rest in peace

My trainer at college knew him and his trainer. Said Sutherland always had extreme confidence problems and had suffered with depression for a long time and extreme insecurities as well. He was meant to be very close with his trainer especially and his family and could not really talk to new people. When he won broze there was a lot of pressure on him to move to go pro and move to London (where he lived by himself), his trainer remained amateur as they didn't do Pro/Am then and he just took it all a lot worse then everyone expected.

I think they all just wanted to give him a push so he could learn to stand on his own two feet and live the dream but he needed support due to his problems.

Where did you go to college buddy?

It just goes to show that commisions and boxing boards need to take a real look at fighters livestyles and emotional health between fights, it isnt fair that a fighter should only be close with a few people, like you said about Darren, all the pressure shouldnt be on his trainer and close ones

Areet Del Boy. I go to Gateshead college doing the AASE amateur boxing and sports science programme. These courses are new but are run across the country (there is actually one run out of Khan's gym) and has been featured on an episode of ringside n aye it's a very sad story and could possibly have been prevented.

Very sad story but from what I've heard Maloney did not cover himself with any glory throughout the whole Sutherland episode.

seen Sutherland v Degale for the EU gold in Ireland a number of years ago- classic fight and Sutherland, who is one of the nicest bxers i meet, really didnt like chunky- would have been a great fight in pro ranks

It's unfair to blame Maloney the way he has been. Sutherland was the one who decided to top himself and do this to his family and everyone else.. and you know what, that was his choice to make and you can't criticise him for it. Sutherland clearly had mental problems all along. He was part of the Ingle gym as a youngster but just as he was going to turn pro he decided to pack it in and go back to Ireland. Similar situation. He seemed to really doubt himself deep down and he feared failure, which he thought was inevitable. His last fight with Rasalev was actually a very hard fight. He took some flush shots felt them imo, his eye was busted up. Rasalev hasn't fought since either. It was a really hard fight at journeyman level and that dented his confidence massively.

I dont think Maloney was criticised for anything prior to Sutherlands death, and for anything that the day he ended his life.

Moreso for the days following his fighters death when he informed the Sutherlands he'd be wanting the signing on fee for Darren back. Classless wanker

Yeah pal, apparently so. That was what Sutherlands father was going crazy about (understandably so)
