Regardless, if one feels Chavez should of lost or won that fight, Taylor was destroyed and never the same. Did you see in the 11th round where Taylor threw an uppercut and nailed himself with it? That's how out of it he was. Great fight of Speed vs Power.
Arguably the Taylor fight was the start of his decline. Everything after his fight was not the REAL JCC.
What's overrated about beating Edwin Rosario, Roger Mayweather, and Hector Camacho? :huh Those were solid wins.
Thanks for posting that, been awhile since Ive seen anything from that fight *Lampley was much more professional back then. Not the characterture hes become today. * What a complete and pure warrior M.T was. This guy had all the ability in the world to box a more safety first approach using his speed to help soften some rounds.... but this guy loved the blood n guts. And even when he was getting pulvarised in the 11th round, there is simply no quit in him... that is just amazing. * Just a hard call on whether MT should have been allowed to continue.... I have to think that MT should have been given a chance to answer the call. * Stupid ass corner of MT, telling him how he needed that round instead of seeing the condition he was in and telling him to box intelligently. Using intelligence is not cowardly. Using intelligence is not retreating. Its simply being more elusive, using your jab a lot more, rely on your footwork a lil more, picking your spots more, and not staying in the meat grinder and continue getting pulvarised. What a horrible corner. * For any newer fans seeing this for the first time, also check out 'Legendary Nights : Chavez vs Taylor' if you can find it on Youtube, its a series HBO did on fights and the Chavez vs Taylor one is pretty good :good
Chavez was an ATG, forget about the 87-0 and concentrate more on the fact that he beat a who's who of the top guys of 130-140 around that time. He had terrific ring cutting skills, amazing combos, heavy hands, effective defense with slipping and rolling with shots, picked his shots well. Taylor was an excellent fighter who had a short peak. The decline he had from this fight was exaggerated thanks to HBO's Legendary Nights, which spawned more myths than Ancient Greece. He still had some in the tank despite not being the same afterwards, scoring the 2nd best win of his career after Chavez. He was bound to be a shooting star rather than a guy who reigned for a long time. I havent heard anyone make a good argument on how a guy with his style, frame, and modest power was gonna reign for awhile at 147, even if he never fought Chavez. According to Taylor, he had to move up out of necessity due to his body size.
