I think we are forgetting 37 is old for a fighter especially one with Tua's style. We have seen Vitali, Hopkins being very effective fighters at an advanced age but lets face it they are not the norm, most fighters do not look good after 35, I still think Tua was a very good if not great fighter because of his style and size he could be outboxed but he was a devastating puncher when he connected.

The performance can be explained away with Tua being past his prime and never being that great anyway. I'm not so sure if he wipes out Barrett in 1 or 2 rounds even in his prime, he struggled to KO lesser fighters. That is if we're talking about prime Barrett. They're both well washed up by now.

Tua was obviously never in Marciano's or Frazier's class.

And people blasted me when I said Frazier beats him with ease.

To be fair, this is a bit like in 1981 saying Frazier's always been crap because Jumbo Cummings got a draw against him.

This poor showing (and credit to Monte too) means Tua's abilities today and chances of beating the title holders are diminished.

I don't think comparisons to Tua in his best years hold up.
Even though that version of Tua, the 225lb one, was always fully capable of being outfoxed and outboxed.

He's just never handled angles and a consistant jab well, never developed. Combine that with good stamina and focus, and Tua can be rendered impotent.

I was watching the replay of "Tua-Ike" last night off ESPN and I gotta say---I saw a lot of empty seats there in Sacramento, CA. back in 1997.......

What card was "Tua-Ike" fought on? That wasn't the main event was it?

I still think a 37 year old Tua beats a 37 year old Dempsey, Marciano and Frazier.

Tua would never beat an ATG heavyweight. He was slow of hand and foot and was not relentless. He did have late power and early power but fought even with many ordinary guys. I like David but always felt he was highly overated on this site

Monte Punched instead of covered, too bad he did not have much time or energy left because Tua was hurt badly

Tua always benefited by the opponents fear, like Tyson, Monte is way past it but he has always shown courage

He had a ****ed-up, mismanaged career and was a general under-achiever. Long stints of inactivity, managerial and court problems. Questionable training habits. He was never going to beat Lewis. However, he could have managed some sort of trinket in the 90's. He did possess great power. That aspect is not overrated. But like many who rely too much on this, he never perfectly honed the ability to apply this power to the target.

Why such hate for the guy? I don't particularly relish seeing excellent fighters when they have nothing left.

Barrett definitely showed a tremendous amount of courage, and he deserved to go out on a win.

One judge giving Tua 9 (hell, even 7) rounds in that, just shameful.

    115-111 Barrett

I don't hate David but always felt he was fortunate to not have fought some of the great fighters that many posters on ESB said he would beat. He got beat by Barrett but he is lucky it was not Klitschko or one of the tricky pin-point punch or solid punchers aggressive fighters of the past. I feel in his prime he would have been exposed, still he is a excellent puncher and will be remembered as such despite his other short-comings
