Korobov should have KO'd Uzcategui a couple of times during the fight. Great fighters know when they have their man hurt and finish the job. Kovalev has this. Didn't appear to have it in the amateurs but does now. By the way, I thought the scoring on the Kovalev fight was way off. Weren't acknowledging punches landed by Kovalev.
^^ true that, but still a man who gasses in the amateurs, regardless if he is more skilled than the two Sugar Ray's and Sweet Pea combined, is gonna have a hard time.
it's not stamina issues. i've seen footage of the guy train...run...etc...he's in great shape. the problem is his breathing in the ring. he has very disruptive breathing patterns that contribute to his fatigue. there are very simple solutions. unfortunately, there's no one on his team that understands this.
His breathing is poor and he's very rigid when he doesn't need to be. He has a plenty large enough gas tank, he just empties it quickly. A lot of athletes have the problem that they think they need to train harder or longer to improve their stamina, when the only thing that is going to make a difference is to improve their movement and become more efficient.
Yea i think he may hold his breath when he punches or something. It's strange that such a dominant fighter who had a great amateur career still doesn't know how to breath properly. He should do that "Shhhh" thing fighters do lol. I agree about the breathing but i'm not totally sold on the rigid part. While i agree he's too stiff at times, he generally seems to look relaxed imo and his pace is nothing to write home about. Maybe i'm not so wrong on him having some kind of problem but people say he trains pretty hard. I must admit, i'm a bit perplexed. .
There's nothing wrong with what he does when he's throwing punches, it's what he's doing the rest of the time. He has a rigid torso at all times, he'd get fatigued not moving at all.
Yes he had a crushed sinus for about 5 years but supposedly got it fixed 2 or 3 years ago. The odd thing is in his last fight against Edwards who was offering more offense than Uzcategui he went 9 rounds had a much higher workrate was consistently throwing combinations and didn't show any endurance issue. He's a viscous body puncher but it didn't show up until the second half of the fight and he throws excellent damaging combinations when inside but Uzcategui was thwarting that by constantly clinching after Korobov would land a counter and try moving in. That's one of the reasons his workrate was lower on the outside he mainly uses counter punching but its a set up to get inside and work. Put him in there with someone who isn't a clincher and doesn't have such a long reach he'll be more busy.
Like i said he had a crushed sinus for about 5 years (approx 2005-2010) going back to the amateurs. Quillen who always has a low workrate gasses in the second half of every fight i'v seen at least Korobov showed he can go 9 hard active rounds fight before last. If he gets named WBO mandatory he takes Quillin's belt.
It's amazing how long fans string out the hype on fighters they like. Let's be realistic here ...if a guy has been around for literally YEARS, is 30 years old,and he is still not breaking through at world level , then the only realistic scenario is that he is not good enough. If a guy has what it takes he should be making that breakthrough at the latest by his mid to late 20s. This applies to Korobov. Andy Lee is another example from the same weight class.
