Muhammed King Mo Lawal will undergo knee surgery to replace both his anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee, which could sideline the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion for nine months, said his manager Ryan Parsons. The 29-year-old Lawal lost his title to Rafael Feijao Cavalcante at Strikeforce Houston on Saturday at the Toyota Center, after the Brazilian floored the collegiate wrestling champion with consecutive knees and a right hand. Cavalcante coaxed out a third-round referee stoppage shortly after. Lawal had been leading on the scorecards up to that point, Sherdog.com confirmed with the Texas Combat Sports Progam. Parsons said the injury occurred during Saturdays bout and that Lawal will undergo surgery next Tuesday in Los Angeles. Mo wanted to take one more fight, but we decided that this injury should be attended to first, said Parsons after Lawal was examined by his physician on Monday. Lawal, a 2005 U.S. world wrestling team member, underwent ACL surgery in 2009 after tearing the ligament during the first round of his bout against Ryo Kawamura at Sengoku Seventh Battle in March 2009. Mo danced to the ring and had to be carried out, said Parsons. Lawal rattled off a four-fight victory run in Sengoku before Strikeforce acquired the former University of Central Oklahoma wrestler and 2002 Div. II national champion in late 2009. Lawal out-wrestled Gegard Mousasi to a five-round unanimous decision for Strikeforces 205-pound title at Strikeforce Nashville on April 17 in Tennessee and has become the one of the promotions biggest stars in his three-fight tenure. Essentially a knee reconstruction. Thats a potential career ending injury!!!! Lawal's a stud for real. ACL injurys are no joke. And he's having both replaced! His PCL and his ACL!!
:think Where in the article does it say Lawal was making excuses? Either way that's a serious injury that's requires reconstruction of his knee. Unless Sherdog and Mo are in the habit of publishing lies i just dont get what your point is?
Whether it is Mo or a mouthpiece (doctor, manager etc) it is all often designed to get the people thinking of an excuse. It is becoming impossible to spot who is really hurt and who is not. I like what Scott Harrison did versus Mediana. He claims he was ill after a tough fight. An immediate rematch where he dominated showed that something should have been up. Lashley and Mo need to gun for rematches and prove something was up the first time round.
Except Harrison wasn't ill and got shown up for his lack of boxing skills when he tried to maul Medina... (Miss that dude man..)
I feel for Shogun, Big Daddy Joe, Yuri Foreman and Lawal more than ever now after dislocating and spraining my left knee. Mine happened 2 months ago, and I'm just getting back to normal now. I don't think that I will need surgery down the road, but I have an idea of what these guys went through. Today is the 3rd consecutive day that I have gone without wearing the knee brace. With my injury, everything hurt. Laying down for too long, standing for too long, standing in the shower, and sitting on the toilet. I had to keep my legs elevated all the time for a good month and a half. They have all the heart in the world, but probably aren't financially established. The article said that Mo had ACL surgery last year, and now look. One year later, he is having surgery on the same knee. It's really not worth it IMO, but I know he wants to keep fighting. Whether he hurts his knee again or not, he will most likely have another operation. I'm so lucky that I don't have to get surgery myself.
I watched the fight for the first time since Saturday today, and noticed Mo landing hard on his left knee after that slam he made in the 1st round. I'm not surprised as to why knee injuries are so common in this sport. Shogun heard a pop during a takedown in the rematch with Machida, and sure enough, it was his ACL.
