Bloody great fight. Nonstop action from start to finish. I recall this fight taking place on the same year as Carlos Monzon vs Nino Benvenuti 1. Always thought this should have been the Fight of the Year for 1970.
Amazing that Monzon-Benvenuti garnered fight of the year with a fight like Ramos v Ramos out there. Somewhere along the line Ring forgot what fight of the year meant. I saw Monzon-Benvenuti recently and gave Nino 1 round and had 3 even. I didn't feel it was very competitive. Moreover, Nino performed his array of hopping around and clinching. It wasn't a great fight and I'm sure there is room to say it wasn't even a good fight. I could give it upset of the year, maybe. But Ramos v Ramos is still discussed today which says something. That was a moment missed by the Ring staff.
Have to remember that the higher weight classes were usually held in much higher regard compared to lower weight fights back then. George Foreman vs Joe Frazier 1 was considered FOTY of 1973 when that was a very one sided fight, whereas Arnold Taylor vs Romeo Anaya 1 took place that same year and was a much better fight overall.
I know what you mean. They were so heavyweight-centric that the lower weights would have just got the 'also-ran' category. But that year in particular ('73) gave us Herrera-Martinez II, Herrera-Borkorsor and Ohba-Chionoi. All a far cry better than Foreman treating Frazier like a basketball for all of 2 rounds.
Great fight. Thanks for sharing. It seems back then that the fight of the year was picked by the most significant fight of the year instead of the actually fight of the year. If Ward-Gatti fought in 1973 Frazier-Foreman would of still have won FOTY
