I'd love some more details. I know next to nothing about the man but would read a book on him if I had one. There's really not much information out there about boxers from this era and before... Hell, hard finding information on even more modern fighters sometimes... You know how it is.

Gene Aguilera's book Mexican American Boxing in Los Angeles has many pictures of Ramos and a few stories.

I remember when Ramos was on the scene....rated as a really good fighter. Late 60's, early 70's Fights.
Teo Cruz, Numata, S. Ramos, Laguna, Navarro, Carrasco (3 times).

1972-09-15 : Mando Ramos 134¾ lbs lost to Chango Carmona 134 lbs by TKO at 1:48 in round 8 of 15
"Chango Carmona left Mando Ramos a bloody, helpless figure in tearing the WBC lightweight championship away from the Long Beach fighter in 8 rounds at the Coliseum Friday night. Carmona started out on top of Ramos and stayed there, offsetting the champion's advantages in height and reach with a relentless barrage of bombs, most of which found flesh. In the 4th round, Chango bloodied Ramos' nose with a stiff left, then moments later sat him on the floor with a right to the jaw. Twice in the 5th Carmona put his man down with body blows, Mando sinking painfully to the canvas first from a left to the kidneys, then from a left under the ribs. Ramos outboxed Carmona to win the 7th, but in the 8th Carmona sent Ramos reeling senseless to his haunches with a left hook. He arose but could only stand his ground absorbing Carmona's barrage, and the blood was flowing freely when referee Rudy Jordan pulled Chango away at 1:48 of the round." -Long Beach Independent

    • All scorecards had Carmona leading at the time of the stoppage. George Latka scored it 8-0, Dick Young had it 9-1 and Rudy Jordan saw it 6-3. The unofficial L.B. Independent scorecard had it 7-2 for Carmona and the AP scored it 8-1 Carmona, through seven completed rounds.
    • Ramos received 55% of the $218,000 net gate. He was required to pay Carmona $15,000 from his share. It was estimated Ramos cleared app. $55,000.
    • WBC Lightweight Title

Ramos fought Raul Rojas in 1970. For awhile they were both managed by Jackie McCoy and there was a lot of animosity between them. Rojas had hammered the young Ramos in sparring. As Ramos grew up the sparring sessions became gym wars fought at a world championship level.

When they signed to fight there was a lot of trash talk. Ramos had a birthday party for his son and Rojas showed up. He told Ramos that he, Rojas, was just coming to get paid, wasn't training, and planned to lay down early. He asked Ramos to take it easy on him.

Ramos went on a week long party binge, not going to the gym at all. McCoy found him and told him that Rojas was training hard, that he had lied. That got Ramos back to work and he won in six.

Need to find me some time to watch these!

Seen the Mando v Sugar fight already - one of the best of the 70s I think. I had Mando winning by one round. Even though he had all the advantages in that one - he was naturally bigger, quicker and punched harder - he couldn't resist going to war. You've got to love fighters like that.

His first fight with Carrasco is one of the most criminal robberies I’ve ever seen. He beat the hell out of Pedro, dropped him several times, and just absolutely bossed him in every way. Finally the red stopped the fight for no reason and disqualified Ramos. Carrasco was as surprised as everyone else. He literally stood there with his mouth hanging open in confusion and his hands at his sides wondering what’s going on. Absolutely disgusting.

What was there "validation"? Unnecessary roughness,a butt, hitting below the belt...?

He disqualified Ramos for hitting below the belt. Ridiculous. At the end of the previous round Ramos, who looked a lot bigger, cracked Carrasco with a perfect right hand. Carrascos knees buckled and he fell into Ramos, grabbing him around the waist and arms, holding on for dear life. Ramos kind of stumbles back into a corner and sort pivots, causing Carrasco to fall. Ramos walked away expecting Carrasco to get a count but instead the referee admonished him for shoving. The bell rings (apparently, it cant be heard) and the referee sends the fighters to fight. Both kind of look on cluelessly as Carrasco points to an official ringside who is apparently saying the round is over. The fighters return to their corners. When they come out for the next round Ramos throws one punch, a left hook high on the head, Carrasco falls into a clinch. Both of Ramos' hands can be clearly seen and he is not punching. Instead his hands are held high kind of signaling for the ref to break them. The ref comes in, stops the fight, and disqualifies Ramos for a low blow that was never even thrown. Both fighters stand there completely stunned and even Carrasco questions the referee as to what is happening. Ramos had beat the absolute hell out of Carrasco. Dropped him four times and had him completely out on his feet in the 11th. The referee was clueless, totally inexperienced. It was his first title fight and the only fight you can find listed for him on boxrec. It was complete and absolute home cooking to protect Carrasco and hand him the vacant title. To add insult to injury, after the fight in his dressing room when interviewed by the press Carrasco said he was hit low. I cannot be more clear that there wasnt even a punch to the body in the final round. Ramos threw ONE punch and it was a hook high on the head. Literally one of the worst robberies I have ever seen. Ramos was that dominant. That far ahead. And in no way guilty of the infraction he was accused of.

Sounds like a black eye to the sport, though not a unique or even exceptional case. When's the first time you saw the footage for this bout out of curiosity? I'm not sure if I've ever heard the bout mentioned previously in any real capacity though it certainly warrants mention if it is indeed that bad.
