Every fighter starts out green, then improves and plateaus and then declines. Nobody has ever started out and remained at the same level for eternity.

I attribute Manny losing the third and fourth fights with Marquez to a couple of things. One, it was just a very bad style match up for Manny. It happens.

Two, Marquez was always a great pound for pound level fighter. He had better technique than Floyd or Pacquiao. He just wasn't as physically gifted.

But he did have one advantage and that was having a better trainer/strategist than either of them in Nacho Beristain. That can make all the difference. There's a reason why four of the five men who beat Muhammad Ali were trained by Eddie Futch.

Fourth, I think that fighting each other that many times, Marquez got used to Pacquiao's style and was able to adapt. You see that in rivals who fight each other that many times. The guys who fight each other ten times get each other's timing down and even start fighting like each other.

Fifth, I assume that Pac was off the juice and Marquez had just gotten on it.

Sixth, there's a lot more luck involved in boxing than people like to admit. Sometimes guys have an off night.

There was a mountain of difference. Four years is a damn long time in sports. You know that. Look at Sergey Kovalev in 2018 against Alvarez, then go back and watch him in 2014 against Caparello.

The one that fought Brook and Broner, sure. Boxing's no country for old men, bro. There's a damn good reason why Floyd and Manny never fought Thurman, Brook, Khan, Spence, or Porter. A 38 year old Floyd versus a 27 year old Porter? Floyd would get his clock cleaned. It would probably look something like Ray Leonard vs Hector Camacho.
