The police said today that they had broken up a Midwestern sex ring that plucked teenage girls from the streets, kept them captive and coerced them to peddle jewelry and sex.
A man the police said was the ringleader, Henry Charles Davis, 32, was arrested here on Monday and is set to be arraigned this week on charges of **** and abduction.
Mr. Davis is accused of kidnapping at least six teenage girls, some as young as 13, from the Cleveland, Chicago and Detroit areas, the police said. Calling himself Mr. Daddy, he made girls sell cheap jewelry at strip malls; some were also raped, beaten and coerced into prostitution, the police said.
''There is an orientation where they are told, essentially, that your life as you know it is over, you are essentially owned by me. I'm your daddy,'' said Avery Friedman, a lawyer representing a 17-year-old from Cleveland who said she was among those abducted.
The police described the Detroit house where Mr. Davis was arrested as a classic pimp's lair, where girls were treated alternately with lavish generosity and raw violence.
