Throughout Pacquiao's career, I have noticed that he struggles with defensive/offensive counter-punchers. Here is the list of counter-punchers he struggled with:

Agapito Sanchez - In this fight (although Sanchez was dirty & excessively holding) he failed to make adjustments needed to win & had to settle for a draw.

Juan Manuel Marquez - In 4 fights, Pacquiao was never fully able to figure out how to penetrate Marquez's style. He had a lot of successful moments, but he never could sustain it due to Marquez style just being hard for him. The fight that he came closest to finally solving the Marquez riddle, was the fight in which he got KTFO.

Joshua Clottey - While Pacquiao won wide, he was struggling to land clean punches throughout the fight. In fact, it was Clottey who landed the more effective punches, but they were so few that he barely won a round - as he was simply outworked & outhustled by Pacquiao. Despite that, Clottey's face was clean after the fight, whereas Pacquiao had a moderate-sized mouse under his right eye, along with some bruising.

    Floyd Mayweather -
While we can speculate on how this fight would have gone if it happened 5 years earlier, & who ducked who - on fight night, Floyd had minor problems with Pacquiao & won comfortably. Pacquiao once again failed to make adjustments & was fighting Mayweather's fight.

Adrien Broner - Like Clottey, he won this fight clearly, but once again didn't look spectacular in doing so. For the first half of the fight, Pacquiao had a hard time landing cleanly on Broner due to his tight defense. In the 2nd half he adjusted & did what he needed to do win, but Broner wasn't dominated & had some decent success in the early rounds - landing sharp counters while making Pacquiao miss. I had him winning 4 rounds.

Yordenis Ugas - The most recent example is of course last night with Ugas - in a fight that wouldn't have taken place if Spence wasn't injured (allegedly). Even though his age & inactivity did play a role in his defeat, his track record shows that he would still have problems with Ugas even in his prime.

In conclusion, this isn't a hate thread on Pacquiao, but merely an observation that historically he has struggled with counterpunchers. If this is his last fight, then I want to thank him for all the legendary fights & moments he gave us & wish him a happy & healthy retirement.

He didnt struggle against Clottey or Broner and sanchez wasnt a counter puncher.

Marquez struggled more with counter puchers than Manny did.

Don't think he struggled with clottey or Broner but I get your point.

His style is actually tailor-made for counter-punchers, would allow for numerous openings to exploit.

Pacquiao struggles with his ego. He should have retired long time ago.

Dont know much about Ugas past fights but I would point out and ask is Ugas really a counterpuncher?
What I saw against Pacquiao was Ugas initiating the exchanges and using the jab as Pacquiao plodded foward.
A true counterpuncher waits for the opponents to initiate with a punch and then gets himself in proper position to hammer him for not properly timing the aggressive advance.
Ugas did some of that, but that was'nt the prime reason he was effective.
The one thing Ugas did that I'm certain he got out of watching tapes of Marquez-Pacquiao was that early on like Marquez, he was loading up with hard right hands to Pacquiao's midsection and making him think twice about rushing in with combinations.

Pacquiao doesnt struggle with counter punchers per se. Prime Pacquiao had 1 draw (Marquez) and 1 defeat (Morales). And the only man to actually beat a prime Pac wasnt known as a counter puncher.

Pac would have struggled with Paulie. Pac has ducked the Magic Man since 2008.

I've always thought so. Broner should not be listed. The emphasis lies on Marquez and Mayweather individually and always will but also in that he didn't seem to fight many back foot counter punchers at all.

Short aggressive guy with shorter arms struggles with counter punchers? Wow wouldn't of thought of that.
