With the recent retirement of Manny Pacquiao, it got me thinking, who is the greater all time fighter. Manny Pacquiao or Roy Jones? Both accomplished great things in boxing, jumping up and down many weight classes. I think its fair to be skeptical of both of their rises in weight and how natural it was. Anyways whos the greater fighter. Or better. Whichever term you chose to use.
Roy Jones would have been an elite all time-great if he just decided to retire after winning the heavyweight championship from Ruiz. But he had to go down in weight again which messed his body up pretty bad. Roy Jones was a four-weight champion while Manny is an eight-weight champion. Although Manny started fighting below his walk around weight due to malnourishment as a kid and so had many more weights to go up to in comparison to Roy Jones who only had limited weights to go after middleweight in comparison.
Imo both were freaks of nature. Roy did it first then Manny came up right after (I can't choose). Both had something in common with Muhammad Ali the goat heavyweight champion in history: for Roy, it was as though he used his ali-esque elusiveness to use his quick reflexes to throw only when needed dangerous shots while keeping a low punch output but by all means by "leaning back and keeping his hands down relying on natural talent/ reflex. " For pacman it was the depth perception: Ali liked to pepper guys on the inside then dance immediately outside. Same way how PAC slayed the giants regarding Antonio Margarito in particular. What he did was mess up his opponents depth perception of himself by using his personal body to jump right into range with his Trex arms shots then immediately bounce back to the outside where their arms were too short to reach Manny! Both guys were freaks of nature, but I feel like there is a catharsis that rjj went the distance with iron Mike albeit an exhibition while his peers were getting knocked off front and center.
Pac is easily the greater. He stepped in the ring with just about everyone, and performed at a top level throughout.
He was already the GOAT since July 2019 — the year he broke even more records when he beat Thurman's ass.
Pac is in actual deed. Roy had the potential to be greater but (I say this as a fan and him being one of my faves) he had a lot of misses, could've done more, then kept going far too long. This is the reason why most people consider Roy the most perfect physical specimen in boxing history but you never see him in top 20 ATG lists. He's definitely an ATG but quite frankly there's a long line of guys who actually accomplished more.
