Mayol is still just flicking out weak jabs and tries an occasional sweeping right that whistles through the air. Gallo is getting in and landing short punches on the inside, not doing much damage but scoring. Mayol steps back and lets his hands go, landing a few head shots but still just a drop in the bucket of leather poured on him by Gallo throughout the round.

Round 3

Gallo takes long steps forward with his lead foot and jabs in on Mayol, who seems discomfited. Mayol backs off before freezing like a deer in headlights when he sees Gallo right on top of him digging in body shots. Mayol tries to sweep with a right hand and gets intercepted by Gallo's glove. 1-2 by Gallo. Mayol seems confused. Double hook by Mayol, the first one lands. Gallo holds him and bangs the body. Mayol puts his head down and works the body. Gallo clubs down at him and answers with body shots reaching around. They stay leaned together and infight, with Mayol getting backed to the ropes but landing some clean stuff. Good left upper-hooks by Mayol. Gallo misses a left hook. Mayol then slips a right hand and lands his own hook. Double jab by Gallo sets up a hard right hand, but it only catches Mayol on the neck. Soft 1-2 by Mayol to close out the round, keeping Gallo at bay.

Closest round yet, but still 30-27 Gallo

A little more from Mayol would nick it for him.

 

Round 4

Mayol circles and feints with jabs starting from the hip. Gallo tries an overhand right but gets his arm pushed back with his elbow pointing straight up in the air and his knuckles aimed down at the ground. Mayol lands a NICE 1-2. Mayol is starting to find his sharpness. Mayol ducks a right hand. GOOD combo on the inside. Gallo is still doing his same thing from earlier rounds, not really doing anything wrong; it's just that Mayol has gotten better. Mayol circles and jabs crisply. Big hook misses by Mayol. Gallo tries to jab his way in but is getting his left arm caught and yanked in by Mayol, tugging it nearly out of Gallo's socket. Mayol now backs him up threatening with his jab and grabs him behind the head to pull it down when Gallo tries to target the body.

Round 5

Mayol lands a good right hand and has finally hurt Gallo. Mayol starts to put nice accurate power punches together from mid-range while backing Gallo up. Hooks and uppercuts, head and body. Nice. Gallo tries to back him off with a right hand but Mayol isn't having it. He's in the zone now. Clapping overhand right by Mayol, getting a bit sloppy again. Now a left hook to the body. Another one strays very low. Tony Weeks warns him about it. Mayol throws a big right uppercut, and it just barely catches Gallo. Mayol backs up a little but only enough to spread his stance wide and throw some left upper-hooks and long right hands. Gallo is getting rocked a lot. Gallo starts to shuffle back and circle wide to his right. Gallo stunned by a stiff jab, his skull vibrating. Mayol comes forward with a sloppy flurry, a 1-2 and an uppercut missing but is backing Gallo up.

Round 6

Mayol hooks to the body while carouseling around Gallo. Good short hooks to the jaw on the inside as well. Mayol is throwing from just far enough away to stay inside but be able to move out of the way of the slower-handed Gallo most of the time. The Mexican isn't finding the timing to counter that speed except with a couple of clipping shots. Mayol gets grabbed. Gallo jabs above his head as Mayol ducks very low below his waist. Mayol continues to circle and pop his jab and right hand and trades with Gallo before the bell.

Closer round, Mayol not landing as fluidly as in 4 & 5 but still got some good shots in.

I've got it even through 6.

 

Round 7

Mayol backs up and jabs, hiding behind his guard. Mayol taps his gloves together but doesn't engage, again backing away and hiding. Gallo walks right in and takes a flush right hand to the face. Mayol jabs while coming forward and then takes a quick hop backward while throwing a hook that nearly catches Gallo advancing. They tie up. Long jab from Mayol. Gallo tries to hook him to the ropes and Tony Weeks separates what is obviously degenerating into a work-free clinch. They trade body shots up close. Mayol chases without punching, hands low. Gallo drops his own hands and just trots off to the side, taking some time off.

Round 8

Mayol willingly trades jabs inside, his head dropping out of sight whenever Gallo throws a right. When Gallo hooks, though - Mayol hooks with him and lands harder. Gallo tries to bully him to the ropes and works the body. Mayol simply carries him back to the Tecate logo and shoves him off. Mayol flurries even as Gallo grinds his head into his armpit, eventually acquiescing when Tony Weeks calls for separation. Jab to the face by Mayol. Gallo works the body but can't get a clean head shot off to save his life. Mayol gets shoved into a corner and moves his head as Gallo tries to tee off on it. Good right by Mayol. Gallo is pushed to the ropes and Mayol works the body, with Gallo firing right low stuff right back despite being pinned.

77-75 Mayol

 

Round 9

Mayol pumps out a right and left combo. Gallo is trying to clap his way in with shots from either side but can't get close without getting nailed. Big right hand by Mayol. Gallo manages to grind him to the ropes but doesn't get many punches off. A few behind the head for Gallo. Now he bends forward into Mayol and rams him with his big dome into the ropes. Gallo working the body still. Mayol is abiding the wrestling until Weeks breaks it up and then throwing hooks and uppercuts, landing only a few but they're the only eye-catching shots of the round. Gallo is throwing hard but missing when they break. More wrestling. Gallo holds and hits. Mayol flurries and hits glove. Gallo gets on top of him again and whacks him in the back with his right hand.
