Let's assume your one of those people, and it could be a number of you, who felt that Manny Pacquiao was on the losing end of two fights with Mexico's own Juan Manuel Marquez. Some knowledgeable fans on this website, no names mentioned, often ignore official scoring when judging individual fighters P4P Ranking. For example, many will attribute Oscar De La Hoya with a victory over Trinidad and Shane Mosley, and therefore he'd rank quite high in their judgment. Let's assume your one of these people. How does that effect Manny Pacquiao's standing in history in your mind's eye?
Not heaps because overall I see there series as drawn...inconclusive really. Pac won the first fight IMO, Marquez won the second..both were close enough to be able to argue it either way. Id rather not let those fights adversely effect Manny's standing but positively effect Marquez's if possible. Im not sure where I stand on Juan yet.
Marquez has Pacquiao's number. No debating that. Many great fighters have faced someone that no matter what, they couldn't beat - or couldn't beat convincingly, anyway. Ken Norton had Ali's number...Tarver has Roy Jones' number...Vernon Forrest had Mosley's...just to name a few. I thought Pacquiao won the first fight 115-112, but he lost the second one. The knockdown was just enough to give him a controversial win, nothing more. But despite the fact that JMM has Pac's number, does that mean he is a greater fighter? Has he accomplished more? Who'd win now? I think we all know the answers the that.
My overall assessment of the two fights is this......both were freakishly tough and close bouts, but with Manny having the slight edge. The repeated knockdowns and the scoring mistake, puts in my mind Manny as the victor. Manny did his job, put JMM on his ass 4 times, and snatched the necessary points to avoid the jaws of defeat (something JMM failed to do!). The second fight was by no means a robbery like some suggest! It was a close fight which could have gone either way.
same here. i have pac winning the 1st (judge admitted that he made a mistake with that 10-7 score) and jmm won the 2nd. but the sad part is, another rematch won't settle it anymore if it's not gonna be held at 135lbs (at 140lbs and above, it will be PAC-EM III all over again IMO).
Even if Manny had lost the Marquez rematch ( which I feel he did), he has still accomplished a great deal in the sport. If they were to have the third fight, anywhere above 140, Pac will TKO Marquez this time.
I dont think its any shame to have a close war with Marquez. Marquez is a living legend too. Floyd fought tooth and nail with Castijo and Hopkins lost twice to Taylor. These things happen. You have to look at a fighter overall, not just isolate one or two fights.
First I'm not one of those smart asses who believes in their own scoring rather than the official results on closely contested fights. Honestly I don't see the JMM issue having any effect on Pac's standing in boxing history . . . he knocked out a linear 140 pounder fighter and a welter title holder fighter after that . . . so the later will carry more weight.
...Worst poster of all time. **** off, seriously. Why do you even come on ESB? You know **** all about Boxing.
Just name me! I am perfectly fine with being named. I am one of those people, and I think the opposing view is very bizarre indeed. It would take a psychologist to unwind how someone can take opinions they don't agree with, yet factor them into their own opinions. It just doesn't make sense. I don't understand how a human brain can even compute such things :nut I don't think Marquez won either Pacquiao fight conclusively. In fact, I have Pacquiao up on points over the two fights. I had him winning the 1st by 2 points, and I had the second either even or by a point to Marquez. But even if I re-watched, re-scored, and had Marquez up, it wouldn't affect my rating of Pacquiao much. Marquez was a great fighter, and Pacquiao has improved since he fought Marquez.
