Harold Lederman, speaking on this lovely off balance lead left, one of his trademark punches.

My question to you is, is the quote from the title (and one of the reasons Harold scored the round to Manny, and the fight), one of the most awful, oversimplified, incorrect peices of commentary (and judging) that you have heard? Because it is for me.

Ring generalship can always be a subjective term, but for me surely the consensus has to be controlling the pace, tempo and direction of the fight (which JMM was doing), not simply hitting someone, and stepping to the side.

Why does Harold Lederman in particular feel the need to oversimplify scoring criteria in order to justify his awful cards?

Ring Genralship is hitting people and stepping to the side
    Effective Aggression is walking forward
Clean hard punching is I don't even know what

Random thread I know but that one line always stood out and enraged me in the fight

Lederman has seen better days. He has some moments. But I don't like his penchant for scoring ineffective activity. In recent years, he seems to miss a lot of clean work and leans heavily to the more active fighter.

Harold Letterman was one of the most respected judges in pro boxing from 1967-1986, almost 20 years of exp and 100 championship fights. He knows what he is talking about.

All judges have head scratching score cards once in awhile, it is just the way it is.
More times than not, the really good ones get it right.

His intention was not to define ring generalship as hitting one's opponent and stepping to the side. He was just providing an example of Pacquiao's ring generalship, and he was correct.

Ring Generalship is being able to control the pace and distance on your terms. Manny has been the superior ring general in most of his fights, but not that one. Getting the drop on Marquez here and there is not indicative of having been in control the whole time.

While I agree with 99% percent of this, you make it seem like what Pac did was a piece of cake, whereas it was a thing of beauty and something immensely difficult to time properly.
