Yes He can, but is he on the level of Maquez or Mayweather.. definitely not... But counter punching is very important in boxing and is a fundemental most fighters can do this especially when being attacked... but Pacquiao can definitely do it. Would I call him a counter puncher to define his style... definitely not.

Yes. Right hook around the jab. Left cross over the jab, right hook roll under and blind over hand left hands. Come on guys, give him his fair shake.

Take another look at his fight with Oscar. It's clear as day.

You are not looking close enough. A counter punch is a punch you throw in reaction to one that is already thrown at you. If you look closely hatton had cocked his left hand to throw a hook but pacquiao countered with his own right hook. The problem is that pacquiao's hook was much faster then hatton's so it doesn't look like he is countering.

It looks like Pacquiao actually could've landed 2 of his hooks before Hatton's made contact.

He is pre-countering. Ask the Floyd fans about that.

I was thinking about that when posting the gifs. It depends on what you class as a counterpunch -- the traditional form of countering is to wait for the opponent to throw a punch, evade or block it, then hit him before he's back in his guarding position. There are other forms, though -- one thing Pac likes to do is hit someone as they're preparing to throw. Personally I class this as a counter, but I can see why others would say otherwise, because he hits them very early rather than late.

In the case of Hatton, he telegraphs his leaping left-hook. He sort of dips to the side so you can see it coming, which is how Mayweather got him with the check-hook, and also how Pac timed him with the right-hook. It's something Roach specifically worked on before the fight:

'"Every time Ricky throws his left hand he pulls it back and cocks it and he's wide open for a short right hook on the inside from a southpaw stance. "We worked on it every day in the gym - the timing shot - and it worked beautiful."

Again, as for whether you can class the shot as a counter or not...it's up for debate. I would call it a counter because he reacted to Hatton's preparation and timed him coming in.

If PAC and Floyd fight Floyd better watchout for his left jab to the body because PAC is going to catch him with one of his counter right. But I'm sure Floyd is smart enough not to throw that punch .

Of course I know Pac was good at counters.. I just need a thread that I could use as a valid argument that its not just me who sees Pac as a counter-puncher..

Sure he can counter. Anyone can counter depending on the level of their opponent.

Pac makes sure he never gets in that ring with a live opponent. Weight draining, corner destroyed, recently destroyed, etc... The JMM fight showed exactly how Pac looks against opponents who are actually skilled.

Throwing the counter BEFORE the punch is even launched. Watch the Ortiz gifs.

Pac can't do that. FMJ can. No need to be upset.
