Manny tends to either knock fighters out or put them in a strictly defensive role when they throw punches at him.

I think he's one of the best counterpunchers in the game today. Most fighters are hesitant to lead against him because those that do tend to get destroyed.

Manny can punch and he's got speed.

 

He didn't do that with Marquez. He didn't knock out Margarito nor put him in a strictly defensive role.

He is definitely not one of the best counterpunchers in the game.:rofl

Marquez fought on the back foot waiting to counter. It's hard to counter punch someone who is waiting to counter punch. Pacquiao already said he had to create the action or it would have been a boring fight. Watch the fight and watch Marquez he was constantly on his back foot, ironically against Mayweather if you watch that fight, he played the aggressive role, he came forward.

 

Pacquiao and Mayweather are both elite boxers. No need to discredit one of them because you prefer the other. Pacquiao wouldn't have defeated all of Barrera, Morales, Marquez, Cotto, Margarito, Hatton and Mosley if he couldn't counter... Just like Mayweather wouldn't be where he is if he was a featherfisted runner.

Many poster here say that Pacquiao initiate the fight and throw insane combos. This in turn makes his opponent to think twice and brawl with Pac. Little do they know that that is one way of Pacquiao can land one of his powerful shots.

That is why Marquez know Pacquiao with all the fights they had. JMM knows how to nullify Pac's offense by keeping himself out of Pac's straight line offense (jab jab left straight- 1st fight). JMM also knows that brawling with Pac will make himself open for a short right or left counter hook (2nd fight), that's why either Juan initiate the offense, then move out of Pac's range (3rd fight) or never engage at all, make Pac gets impatient and waits for a counterpunch whenever Pac makes any reckless move (all 3 fights).

Pacquiao is was an offensive machine back in his lower weight days, that's why Roach became impressed with Pac. Roach improved Pac's jab jab left combo and enhanced his slow ineffective right hook with fast, short right hook (manila ice), more often to counter orthodox right jabs. While pac moves up, he improves his lateral movements, as evident in the DLH fight where he nullified the DLH jab as he moves to his right while leading with his left straight. That's countering.

In today's Pac, we can now call him a boxer-puncher with good countering skills, that can obliterate slower, bigger guys. Well, the fact is that not many 147 fighters today has the same speed as Pac's except JMM and Floyd that WILL always make PAc have a bad day anyday.
