listen to the legend sum floyd up his "floyd" compared himself to be greater then sugar ray and the tommy herns their is no way in the world those fighters when they hitting a man as easy as floyd is hitting valdomire would sit back they would finish the guys of with good combinations instead of landing one and two punches and getting the computer points" amazing quote to describe floyd rip manny steward :hi:
The thing Manny had not realized is Sports evolve. An Floyd's way of fighting is an advanvement/evolution of the sport. Watch when all is said and done.
True enough, but so what? Ali would often ease up on his opponents and let the fight go to the cards if he felt sure he would get the decision, does that make him less great in your eyes?
There is nothing in that quote that implies that he sees one game plan as being superior to another. Just looks like a mere statement of facts from here.
Where does this stuff come from? How has boxing evolved as a whole? Boxing is not like any other sport. There's been better fighters than Floyd. Nobody can say that boxing has evolved. There's great fighters from every era, and some weight classes are stronger today than in certain era's, and some are undoubtedly weaker. If boxing had evolved like other sports, then all of today's guys would be the best across all weight classes. But that clearly isn't the case.
Floyd must have "evolved" into something inferior. Manny said , and I agree, that Tommy and Robbie would have KO'ed an opponent that they were able to hit a freely as Floyd this particular opponent. That means that Floyd is leaving it up to the judges to score who wins instead of ending it himself. Two reasons why that is the case. 1. He does not have the power to, or 2. he choses not to. In either case I would much rather end the fight early than let a man stay on his feet swinging at me for 12 rounds. With how this last Mayweather fight was scored one can see the wisdom in KO'ing you opponent no matter how bad you are outboxing them. BTW, Willie Pep outboxed people much better than Floyd does. That is not a knock on Floyd, that is a knock on "evolution".
As I've said in another thread, Floyd rarely pushes for a knockout because it's a non-optimal game plan for him. He's invariably ahead on the scorecards by the middle rounds, so why would he risk it? Another thing we need to acknowledge is that he IS starting to get older. It's quite normal for a fighter to produce much fewer knockouts as they age, particularly if they we never known to have a brawling style in the first place.
Pernell Whitaker completely outclassed and outboxed Jose Luis Ramirez in there first fight. He lost it. He did the same thing and won. Both on points. Pernell outboxed Julio Cesar Chavez and recieved the most controversal draw in boxing history. The point is not that Floyd should be penalized for his innablity to KO opponent he is hitting easily but, rather to hold him accountable to his boasting. Robinson was KO'ing greater chin than anything Floyd has seen well into his 30's. Floyd is simply not near thier ink in terms of greatness. Why, try to rationalize different when so much stacks against it?
its true floyd in his fights would not push for the knockout (really it was only at 147 and above).. his still one of the best defensive fighters ever
