If you don't think boxing has evolved, then you don't know **** about boxing.

    Yawn...

    Is that it?

Why not delete the curse and prove your point? I bet you will not do any better then what I have quoted you just doing.

    Really?

The point is to not actually pay attention to any boasting from any fighter.

Nobody sits around b!tching at Tyson for not actually eating Lennox Lewis' children or that he didn't actually push Jesse Ferguson's nose bone up into his brain.

    That is right.

Ignore the Pernell Whitaker reference and basically take everything I posted in sum it up out of context Mike Tyson ear biting something or other.

    Thanks

sorry but floyd isnt the best defensive fighter ever, there are so many better guys out there, pernell whittaker, willie pep to name a couple.

if floyd was fighting sugar ray leonard I guarantee he wouldnt be sat on the rope the way he does ;)

You want to talk context? Fine, let's do that then:

Mayweather/Baldomir - The context for this fight is that Mayweather was fighting a guy who hadn't lost a fight in 8 years, had an iron chin, and outweighed him be perhaps 10 pounds on fight night. Mayweather was also in line for a career high payday against De La Hoya with his next fight.

Oh, and he broke his right hand in the 6th or 7th round and basically stopped throwing it after completely DOMINATING every second of every round up to that point.

This is why any conversation as to how Mayweather should have been going for the KO, in THAT fight, in THAT context, was absolute bullsh!t at the time. manny Steward should have been was fully aware of this.

Sweet Pea/Ramirez - The context for these two fights is that in the first fight, Sweet Pea was fighting in France, a country that Ramirez has been out of for the previous 2-3 years. The southpaw Sweet Pea injured his left hand in the 6th round.

He was in no position to NOT let the fight go the distance.

And while the injury forced him to rely on his jab, movement and Ring IQ to flummox Ramirez, he got fugged on the decision in the Ramirez's 'home base'.

A year later they meet again in Virginia, and Pernell (at home and with full use of his power hand) puts on a clinic.

That is your context for both of the situations you discussed.

Having said that, I'll repeat what I said earlier: The point is to not actually pay attention to any boasting from any fighter.

    You're welcome.

Everyone has an opinion. Manny's was from about 7 years ago. Benard's is from One week ago.

Are people really saying you need power to be an ATG? That is stupid, so Floyd's fights go rlto the cards, what's wrong with that?

    I appreciate the context.

I honestly do. Let me respond.

Mayweather - Baldomir is one fight. What about Marquez and Mosley? He was hitting them at will and could/should have KO'ed them but did not. I can guess why but for whatever reason he did not even try.

My Whitaker references still stand. He was jobbed. Whether his hurt his hand is beside the point. It should have been clear to any judge that he won the fight easily. It wasn't. Going to the cards is inferior to KOing an opponent.

Pernell put on a clinic in VA no question. It was beautiful and I studied numerous times. I think it was his best performance with the Nelson fight.

I do not pay attention to boast but if some like Manny Steward speaks on it I will pay attention and comment if neccessary.

    Thank you.

Arrogant buffoon! I've been around boxing for 35 years. I've seen Frazier, Foreman, Ali, Hagler, Leonard, Napoles, Sanchez and many others in that time. I rate Floyd's skills highly but I have seen better all round fighters. I don't see evolution at work; who has got a better jab today than Hagler had? Who is in better shape?

Don't be fooled by all this Haye does plyometrics and lifts heavy weights ****! Joe Frazier would still have murdered him. So would Jerry Quarry. I'd even back Chuvalo over Haye!

As Loudon has said, there are greats in every era and divisions vary. For example, the 70's had a very strong heavyweight division and now I think it's quite poor apart from the Klitschkos, but the lighter divisions are fine with Floyd, Marquez and PacMan. Even these three aren't doing anything that hasn't been done before, though!

Wtf? It doesnt matter what floyd did in that fight, he wasnt stopping Baldomir. Idiots like to knock him for his lack of punching power but the fact that he doesnt have knock out power, makes what hes doing even more impressive. Hes out boxing bigger and stronger fighters with them having no threat of being KOd.

    Take it easy.

It wasn't like Mayweather was fighting Jake Lamotta of something. No one has heard of Baldomir since. The only reason he has any life at all is because Zab dropped the freakin ball and made him a champion.

Baldomir was a can who got some sunlight.

It's a question of mentality. Some fighters in fact most are killers. They want to
take your head off, get the other guy out of there as quickly as possible.
There are some fighters however who for them the ko isn't everything they tend to be extremely skilful and without one punch power.
Floyd is obviously in this bracket as was pre '67 Ali, two supremely skilled fighters who probably enjoyed outclassing their opponents over the stretch.
Ali had quite a few ko's and had deceiving power but you knew he wasn't really bothered if he got the ko Mayweather is out of the same mould.
It doesn't detract from Mayweather as a fighter at all in a way it simply emphasises just how good he is.

What about Mosley and Marquez. Again, context.

Manny Steward made this statement in 2006. Those fights took place 3-4 years later. So how are they applicable?

We are in total agreement that Whitaker got fugged and the Nelson assessment.

The problem is, Manny was wrong. In Mayweather's previous bouts leading up to the Baldomir fight:

    -N'Dou TKoed
    -Corley dropped twice
    -Brusseles dropped twice and TKOed
-Gatti TKOed after a VICIOUS beating
-Sharmba 'whoop dat trick' Mitchell dropped twice and TKOed
-Judah on his way to being dropped or stopped before the low blow and chaos

6 fights, 4 knockouts, and he put his man down 6 times.

Again, it's hard for me to criticize a guy with a history of hand problems for not going for the KO against an iron chinned guy in a fight in which he's already hurt his hand and a potential mega fight on the other side.

    YMMV.

IMO, that is what is so refreshing about the Showtime coverage vs HBO when it comes to Mayweather fights. Their commentators seem more focused on in-ring brilliance than whether Tiger Woods and Charles Barkley are being entertained.
