Are you kidding me? Different trainers have all different levels of technical, stategic and tactical knowledge about the sweet science of boxing. And certain trainers are more adept at marrying a particular aspect of that knowledge to the individual boxer's natural style and physical capabilities. To think that there is one basic way of 'doing' boxing and that it involves a few simple fundamental rules is ridiculously simplistic. Boxing is an extremely complicated sport with layer upon layer of technical and strategic dimensions that can be practically applied in certain situations and not others. From my personal experience, just when you think you know everything about boxing there's a whole other level that you can learn about from a real knowledgable source. And the orthodoxy of boxing knowledge changes over time. Things that were considered out of the question in the past become part of common boxing techniques. I mean look at the styles of Roy Jones Jnr or Andre Ward or Gamboa. There's no way guys would have been taught to fight like that 50 years ago.

 

True. I find that guys that move like Foreman can be difficult to nail with body shots. You need to bring them onto the punch by forcing them to leap into the direction of the left hook to the body, otherwise you end up hitting fresh air. It wasn't the best body shot I've seen Cotto throw, his elbow was too far away from his hip and he was reaching, but it landed right on the button and that's all that counts.

 

Where is this new cotto some of you are talking about??, Yuri was jabbing and moving from the time the bell went, off course cottos gonna look like a powerhouse against a guy without much power whos constantly on the move.

 

Cotto should be given credit for the way he fought. He followed the advice of Steward well. I don't think he looked like a powerhouse, he looked like a guy who fought a measured, intelligent fight. That's exactly what he needs to do at this stage of his career, he needs to be poised and fight smart. He can get in middle/inside range and bang once he gets them hurt or clearly has their measure, like he did with Foreman. Guys like Foreman can be hard to catch and Cotto should be commended for not over-reaching with his punches or chasing him around. Foreman has a style that can make some boxers look sloppy but Cotto has always fought this style well.

 

Agreed. Boxers who have the same trainer for years and years often develop bad habits that their trainer lets slip cos they keep winning fights. Once the fighter reaches a certain level of opposition those bad habits get exposed. This is particularly the case when a trainer just becomes another yes man in the corner, as was the case with Santiago. Cotto was trying to get back to basics with Jennings but in reality that just equated to Cotto fighting more conservatively but with the same habits. I think Cotto is damaged goods, more mentally than anything. The guy fought back from being badly hurt on a number of occasions prior to the Marg/Pac beatdowns on the back of his mental toughness and will alone. I don't think he can fight back from that situation now that he's tasted what it feels like to be completely destroyed, it will always linger in his mind. But I do think that Steward has ironed out many of those bad habits and has him fighting the right style and will give him the right strategic advice. And I think that will be enough to beat most of the 154 division if not the elite.
