Lee's another Steward fighter who holds his hands too low. You have to have great head movement or extremely fast hands yourself to get away with that. Lee didn't show either tonight.
I'll give you that, and Wlad is also extremely dangerous (when he throws). But I think it's becoming clear that Manny's "style" appeals to guys who are either a) heading toward retirement and looking to avoid contact or b) guys who just aren't naturally fluid fighters. And if that is your problem, no amount of emphasis on the jab and the cross is going to save you against either better talent, or more determined opposition. At some point, you have to be able to fight on the inside and be able to move your head. Manny's fighters can't seem to figure that out.
Steward's den of fighters always seem to lack that durability. Hearns, lewis, moorer, wlad, and now lee all couldn't take punishment for ****.
Agreed ...and he's another Steward fighter who is too vulnerable when his opponent gets inside. Well, at least Banks is still undefeated.
In a way, it's unfair to take a style that worked due to extreme talent, and apply it to guys who just aren't. Tommy was so long, so fast, and so accurate, there just weren't many guys who could GET inside. SRL had to wear him down to get there, and Hagler just ate his power. I knew this fight wasn't going to go according to plan when I heard Manny say "start boxing him" after the fifth. Hell, Vera is faster on his feet than Lee, how was that going to work?
Good point about being vulnerable on the inside. Also, either Vera has an incredible chin or I have vastly overrated Lee's power. Yeah, we've still got Banks with he O. With Rubin Williams and Lee getting TKO'd this week, it's a bad one for Detroit area fighters. And K-9 has a tough match up with Ouma coming up.
That's because Steward has a hard on for taller fighters, and tall, lanky fighters are more prone to having questionable chins. That's why I'm shocked he seemingly never taught Lee how to tie up properly.
Teetop, I agree with some of that, but you might be selling Lewis a little short. He took some brutal shots from Vitaly.
I think Lee was just overconfident after the 1st round. Lee was hoping Vera would just suddenly stop in his tracks after being nailed with a barrage of punches, but no Vera ate Lee's punches. Lee needs to learn how to deal with a fighter that can take his punch. I don't know if Lee has any power in his left hand, since he's a converted southpaw, but that's what he needs to work on. His right hook seems more effective than his straight left.
Yeah he did, but his chin was shaky you have to admit. For the most part alot of stars in his stable had durability issues.
