I know everyone else notices how most of his top fighters are tall for their weight... Is it because he just perfers tall fighters, to make them more "pure boxer" types? Or is he desperate for Hearns 2.0?.. I dont feel like Kermit Cintron is gonna do it either.. I mean, yeah he trained Lennox, and is training Wlad to fight the same as him, but both of them fit the tall bill, and Lennox was after Hearns.. All his fighters have so-so chins as well(just realized this making the thread)
Hearns wasn't just tall, though. What made him such a monster was his fearsome KO power, which is very difficult to find, and his extraordinary boxing skills. He was fast as hell.
Hearns was almost the entire package aside from durability, though his frail frame also allowed him to be out-muscled against certain pressure fighters and would give him stylistic trouble with certain fighters. 154 is probably where he'd be most effective head to head, though he'd also be a nightmare for most at 147. Lewis also slightly lacked in durability, while a Wlad lacks any inside skills and still arguably the durability.
What Lewis lacked in comparison to Hearns, really, was movement. Hearns was a superb mover, and his size was actually greater, relatively, than Lewis' was. Hearns was MASSIVE for a welter...and height advantages mean so much more in the lower divisions.
True, Lewis was always a bit of a plodder in my view honestly. It's why I rate a guy like Holmes slightly higher.
If you look at Hagler-Hearns prior to the KO, Hearns was actually using some damn fine movement. Hearns had better power P4P in my opinion...I do think Lewis had a better chin (and, to a lesser extent, body), though.
I put their chins on pretty similar levels P4P. Against guys like Hagler and Leonard it took plenty of punishment before he went down. Only against Barkley(above his best weights) was he put out by single big shots, whereas Lewis was twice. I think both are generally pretty underrated in this regard, though it wasn't a strong suit.
