http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mn4pTT3WkHo Good advice, but it seems like he didn't have the trust or respect from Taylor because he continued to go out there and not throw contrary to Stewarts yelling at him. Anyone who finds the corner footage from lewis tyson
You have to understand that Taylor-Spinks was probably the worst title fight of all time. They sat there, in the ring, for 12 rounds, posing and refusing to throw punches. They may have thrown 20 punches per round each...it was a total non-performance by both guys and to be honest, they shouldn't have gotten paid for that fight. If I was his trainer I would have slapped him.
Manny Steward's problem is that at times, he gets all caught up in physical attributes and not the intelligence of his fighters. Just last year he had Kermit Cintron and Jermain Taylor, two athletically gifted fighters with low boxing IQ and on two different occasions, they both made him look foolish. I understand it's easy to get locked in on how talented a boxer is...but there's more to it than how many jump shots he can make in a minute or how fast he runs on a track.
Taylor seemed awfully sure he was winning that fight in stunning fashion and I don't remember him ever responding at all to Steward other than nodding when he thought he'd get Mom off his back. Definitely a "what-fight-are-you-watching? I look gooood!" attitude, especially in the middle rounds. At least more of Steward's stable listen than Buddy McGirt's does. Even in the rare flukes when McGirt gives fantastic advice, the only thing the boxer absorbs is the water. Baby.
The only time a Buddy McGirt fighter listens to him is when he says he's gonna stop the fight. Because he can't keep lettin you take those punches baby.
I'm not sure they even listen to him then! I guess Paulie was too busy trying to pop that jab to process that 'touching him to the body' wasn't literal and that 'pulling the plug' didn't mean McGirt had to run to the bathroom as soon as the break was over. Actually, I'm being unfair. Some become a 'baby!' right on cue and Arnaoutis did made sure to get those shoelaces tied as quickly as possible!
They worked on shoe lace tying in the gym. It's obvious Mike Arnaoutis just clearly wasn't doing what they worked on in the gym....baby. At this point Paulie Malignaggi vs Zab Judah is my dream fight. McGirt vs Yoel...a battle of the greats.
Oh man... now I need to track down a better picture of that 'p4p trainer of the world trophy' for the Pac/Hatton fight! Not sure what I'll do to it with my crappy Paint.net skills - still waiting for inspiration on the ESB Trophy freddy-wak wants for Librado Andrade, so Buddy v. Yoel is going to have to wait in line... Oh yeah, I should stick a Steward thing in here somewhere, in deference to the actual thread... I still can't get Lampley's, "I don't think we've ever seen Emmanuel blow this much smoke before," out of my head. :secret Can't remember for sure, but I think it was in the pre-fight for Taylor v. Spinks.
what made that fight even worse it followed pavlik vs miranda wich was a awesome fight that was full of action wich eneded in a brutal ko
Yea, but thats what I'm saying. If Steward had Taylors Respect, Taylor would have listened attentively and followed the advice he gave which was just, throw more ****ing punches.
there comes a point in a fight where giving a fighter advice and talking "X's and O's" is useless. He was trying to motivate Taylor, and Taylor is one of those fighters who isn't mature enough as a fighter to "find a way to win". Mentally, he is just not there.
