I was just wondering if anyone here has a preference on what type of work they do while training e.g a manual work like construction and loading/unloading drucks or a desk job with no real physical effort? And which is "better"
I've done both. The humming sound from a computer when you're stuck in an office all day is enough to make you want to commit suicide. Physical job, 100%. What do you mean by "better"?
Just what u prefer. Like some pople say desk job is better cuz its not physical so you have more energy for training while others say physical is better because your more active so less chance of gaining weight. Stuff like that. I'm atm leaning towards a manual job over desk job
Having done both while training at various degrees of seriousness I honestly find manual work more motivating. I have done tree lopping in the past, and I basically just treated it like training, lifting heavy logs and branches and carting **** around for most of the day. I've worked in retail as well, and that just drains you. At the end of the day I'm so mentally ****ing exhausted I have very little motivation or desire to train. That having been said, I probably prefer the indoor/office/"easy" type jobs over the manual ones.
practical hands on work of some sort, not building houses or anything. I had a 9-5 office job last year, my body completely siezed up over the coruse of the day.
I cant say which i prefer, as ive laboured since i was 16 years old all year round, and im still in the same line of work, hard physical work in any weather conditions is tiring, especially now its getting colder it becomes more and more difficult to put in good work at the gym ,wheras if you work in an office im sure u dont get this problem, but the benefit from shoveling all day is you stay in decent shape even if your not in the gym often (so long as ur diets fairly clean), and u develop great strength in your back over time too
I'd go out of my ****ing mind doing a desk job. In fact, it's the one worry I've got about my aim to eventually become an engineer.
standing desk job. the worst shape of my life I had a manual component to my job, no time to work out, getting run down. The best shape I was ever in was a mostly standing job at a bank: so much energy at the end of the day or in the morning to work out, not taxing enough to wear me out. Teaching at college and long commutes take a bit more out of me, but office all the way for me. Manual labor outside makes me ill, and with a cough I don't get very much out of my gym time.
I've never thought of it like that. At the moment I physically can't go to the gym after work. I'm just too knackered.
ive always thought of it like that it makes perfect sense to me, and i am also struggling to make it too the gym at the moment, lifting heavy weights is the last thing on my mind after work. EDIT- also i think if you work at the bank for example and your not labouring all day, its easier to work out how many calories you need to be consuming wheras i havent a clue how many im using up at work, although i should think ALOT
After many years working for the Airforce I'm quite happy with my deskjob right now... It also allows me to browse on ESB while I'm 'working' like now.
That isn't nor will ever be a standard desk job. Lots of practical work and implementation, you aren't sitting simulating stuff at a computer all day.
The ideal job for me is half-n-half. Half in the office drafting reports, compiling data, mathematical modeling, etc. The other half spent surveying, inspecting, gathering samples. The best of both worlds. I get to stay in an air-conditioned office and then get outside when I get bored.
