I am not referring here about knowing the game as thoroughly in the ring. I'm talking about knowledge in regards to knowing various other fighters in different weight classes.

Throughout the many years that I've followed this sport, I was often amazed at how many pros seem to have limited knowledge about other fighters in the industry.

Obviously, everyone knows the biggest names and figures in boxing such as Mayweather, Pacquiao, Cotto, Hopkins, Marquez, etc.

    But.....

You would expect most guys to be very knowledgeable about a wide variety of other non main stream names, if BOXING truly is their passion in life.

It just seems like most guys, not all of course, don't know much about other fighters except the ones they faced or are about to face, + the popular main stream names.

Anyone else thinks this is a little odd ?

I don't know where you got your 'facts' from about boxers knowing nothing about other boxers. You can't stereotype.:patsch

Not really, most aren't in it for the love of the sport, they do it for the $$$

He never claimed it was a fact just an observation, neither did he say it applies to all boxers either.

It obviously doesn't apply to all of them, but seems to be many. 20 years of watching, reading and hearing various fighters answering questions about their sport...

  6. Its like Muhammad Ali said, "Postmen don't go for walks on their day off, so I don't watch (follow) boxing when Im not in the ring".

Apples and Oranges. A boxer will know more strageties but not every boxers that is currently boxing. They will probably know more on their potential opponents.

I hear ya. I think it's because they are so invested in the performing and achieving side of boxing that they don't know as much as a fan who has the time to take an interest in all things got to do with the sport.

I can actually understand this. When I was younger I played tennis and spent too much time practicing and playing tournaments to watch much on TV. Actually, as much as I enjoyed playing, I wanted to get away from the game when I had time off and usually watched other things or read. But to this day I can tell you many of the guys in my division/region and how I fared against them.

I can see the same thing happening in boxing.

Froch is a big fan of the game I think, but he's one of the exceptions.

Hanging out at the wild card I was amazed at how little the guys there actually know about the sport. I was trying to talk boxing with Vince Phillips and he gave me an all-timer list without Langford, Greb and Armstrong on it :patsch

To be honest, most boxers are not even boxing fans.
