Haha, well, I guess there's a reason I don't do Vegas. My brief thoughts: I'm actually picking Clay over Salka and Masternak over Mormeck. Those guys can't be that big of underdogs at all, right? And I favor Grachev slightly over Oosthuizen although I think that is a "pick em fight" and would probably outright pick a draw if that wasn't always so unlikely (I've actually been a fan of both these guys and while one is crude and the other isn't crude enough, I think they've had slightly underrated careers and on a good night can trouble most fighters). I wouldn't lay a dime on Ouali against anybody (hasn't been nearly the same, not that he was ever that good, since Carson Jones punked him brutally and forced a stool stoppage on the Mayweather/Ortiz undercard; it was actually a great one sided fight and upset). Funeka... Man, I don't know what that dude has been up to but I wouldn't lay a dime on him as a favorite either. I'm unfamiliar with his opponent entirely so not particularly referencing this fight, same with my comments on Ouali, but I'd be worried that the string bean doesn't get anything going and even if he's the superior fighter on the night, loses through essentially poor body language. I think we should get at least two "upsets" here. Good thread, lets see how it all unfolds!
From ringside accounts on Twitter: :good The jerks at www.wbcboxing.tv didn't end up showing any live boxing tonight. Instead they showed Luis Concepción vs. Duvan Hernandez thrice in a row.
Why not? Salka is a very active fighter, whose only deserved loss could be argued to be to Garcia. (that he got robbed against Canelo's brother Ricardo Alvarez is almost universally believed, and he may have been screwed against old Spivey too) Clay is gifted but has struggled to stay active, falling off the map a bit after his pair of losses in 2009. A fourteen month layoff was followed by a kayo of Jason Litzau's brother, and then eight months off, and then a quick succession of three fights at home in a span of seven months, then another eight months off, two victories over Lucero in a five month period, and then almost nineteen months off again before returning this year. His TKO of Herrera on FS1 this summer is very nice, but was his only meaningful action seen in over five years.
Mundine & Heiland. That's it. Kalenga will probably make for a third, and there is the remote chance of Zuniga providing a fourth. (at least, more chance than either Gamboa or Mijares losing... :! Zappavigna, Browne, Diaz, Cuadras, Briedis, Pedraza, and Klitschko all won and won big, in dominant fashion. (shutouts, or close enough, and stoppages) That's just the main list. Off the secondary: Vasquez obliterated Mosquera, Salka bloodied Clay in a boxing lesson, Oosthuizen stopped Grachev, Funeka popped Belaev's cherry, and Ouali vs. Figueroa never happened. So no upsets there. Altogether, 2 of 15 (really 2/16, but one fight got canceled) that have so far been possible...but the pair that happened were only in the 'moderately likely' category and Mundine's at least came to many of us as quite a surprise. ...mainly because we overrated Rabchenko. IB, keep this thread alive for us degenerate gamblers. I looked at some heiland tape and laughed at the +600 offered by the casino. Sure it was in Ireland but I still thought it was a 50/50 fight. Sadly, I Bet on heiland and took the buckeyes -14. Of course they are up 17 in the 4th when on the punt return the dude drops it on the 3 yard line. Anyways please keep the thread alive.
Mundine, Heiland and Kalenga scored upsets. Zappavigna, Browne, Diaz, Cuadras, Briedis, Pedraza, Klitschko, Vasquez, Salka, Oosthuizen, Funeka, Nietes, Ramírez Sánchez, Gamboa, and Mijares denied upsets in victory. 3/18. 16%.
