Vitali had been pro for 7 years and was 33 fights into his 47 fight career, I find it unlikely that he was green. Infact that's a very similar record to the current WBC beltholder a certain Mr Wilder.

My question is, why didn't Vitali step up earlier?

Vitali turned pro in 96, he could have stepped up around 98-99 and fought some of the bigger names, seeing as there were plenty about.

And his opposition post Lewis was just as bad.

I rate Wladmir highly, much higher than Vitali.

Vitali turned pro in Nov 1996. Who do you want to to fight who in 1998? That's pretty much one year as a pro. In less than three years time he was in the ring with Hide, and won a title. That's a fast track.

As an outsider in Germany, it was not easy getting big fights. Other promoters had their own signed.

There is not a single ATG heavyweight with a more padded resume than Vitali. Not even close. It is an absolute joke who he fought before and after Lewis when you consider what level of fighter he actually was.

 

He beat many top ten level fighters with shocking ease.

Who else could he have fought? Haye and Valuev backed out of fights vs him. Lewis would not dare re-match him!

And he did far better vs. Sanders, Peter, and Purity in comparison to Wlad.

 

James Toney of the Holyfield fight would have out boxed Vitali.

He sat the division out till a poldder he could tee off on picked up the title.

I give Vitali a lot of credit for exposing Wlads overrated skills but his body of work suggests he wouldn't beat 'just about anybody'
