There's talk about another surgical procedure on his badly damaged right knee, after the tests that are done following the dramatic Cotto fight.
Problem for Martinez is that if the surgery is performed it would mean he has to quit boxing.

Alternatively he can therapeutically try to strengthen and prepare the surrounding tissue to ease the strain on the knee somewhat, and hope for the best in his next fights.

My guess is that it's end of career no matter wich option he takes, but all the best Sergio.

He need to hang them up. His career was over before the Cotto fight, given how bad his knees were before the fight.

    He needs to retire

He should not con the public again. He was telling us repeatedly how his knee was 100% and in the fight, his trainer stated repeatedly that it was not. It was clear from r1 that his knees were fked. He was no longer the same, not even close. He was not even 50% of what he was vs Chavez Jr.

I do not see how anyone can condone things like this. He was literally taking the boxing public as fools. He was there for a paycheck.

Not only did he con fans who went over to NY to watch the fights. He also conned PPV buyers too. :verysad

I do not believe his knee will ever be adequate again for boxing. He has led a great career. He should walk off into the sunset. He will be a HOF in my estimations.

One thing he should NOT do is con the public again.

I don't think he was trying to con the public, I think he thought Cotto and Murray were at a similar level and he survived and outpointed Murray even hurting him in the later rounds in spite of being injured in that fight, and that he could easily beat and or KO Cotto. Had he not been concussed in the first round I think he would have given Cotto a little more of a fight, but yeah he's had a great career, please retire Sergio you've given us enough good memories we don't need any more bad ones.

How was he not trying to con the public?

Him and his team were feeding BS down our throats in the 24/7, interviews claiming that his knee was 100%. It wasn't, not even close. I doubt it was even 30%.

Ffs, not even a knee brace did anything.

During the fight, the trainer claimed that his knee was already fked from the start of the fight.

He was there for a payday. Nothing else.

Him thinking he could get Cotto out there in the first 2 rounds does not justify his actions.

His team knew from the start his knee would be a huge liability for the fight.

He needs to retire. He's one of my favourites but he needs to really accept the facts. His knee is at a point where it's never going to be fight ready.

Well, he sorta did in my opinion but I don't blame him.

Because be real, he more as deserved those paychecks for his complete career.
Much less talented, exciting and charismatic boxers made a lot more money as him, because they were born in the 'right' country and he was not.
If I were him I probably would have done exactly the same. "Sure, nothing wrong with my knee. I'm ready to fight, bring on Cotto" and then just hope for a bloody miracle.
It caused a weird and unfortunate situation in the MW division, but that's not all his fault.

I hope he hangs 'm up, or fights one more fight against some D level stationairy boxer as a farewell bout and rides into the sunset.

To answer MVC and Robney, I think he was in denial. A lot of boxers go through it. They just can't admit to themselves they no longer have it.

I'm a little a ashamed that I'm partually in agreement with MVC. He's on my ignore list so I can't read his posts unless they are quoted.
But if he thinks Maravilla did it on purpose then clearly I'm missing something. So you're probably right Pravda.

Sergioe didn't even have actual knee surgery. It was a scope procedure but yet he's still walking around unsteady like a baby giraffe. What is the actual issue with his knee?!

40 years old, inactive in the ring, inactive in the gym(no, therapy does not equal boxing training) and a bad knee :-(

A great career comes to an end.
