Cerdan definitely doesn't look to have a style made for longevity or moving up and fighting bigger men. It's difficult to imagine he was still in his prime by the time he got to america.

He's got little reverse gear capability that i could see.Part of why i feel he would have been best at Welter.

Some of those earlier KO's he looks notably quicker and more powerful.

For what it's worth...I am one of the few still kickin who saw the Marcel Cerdan decision over Georgie Abrams in 1946 in the old MSG. And I can tell you what type of impression Cerdan made on the vast majority of the crowd
that night so damn long ago. Marcel Cerdan came to the USA with great fanfare based on his ring record in Europe. And I recall Cerdan did NOT
disappoint the crowd against Abrams. He swarming style made a hit with
us as he was the aggressor throughout the fight and Georgie Abrams was the counterpuncher. After the decision was rendered there were no catcalls as
Marcel forced the fight throughout. At that time in 1946 Cerdan was but 30 years of age and had a crowd pleasing style...I feel that he was a damn good fighter who was strong and a relentless swarming middleweight who would give any MW a good tussle. After this fight Cerdan fought a neighborhood acquaintance of my dad and I Harold Green, who twice licked the up and coming Rocky Graziano, and a terrific MW prospect of that time named Laverne Roach, who after the much stronger Cerdan kod him, died a few fights later at the hands of another neighbor of ours Georgie Small. So
my impression of Cerdan was of a terrific crowd pleasing MW who was a heck of a good, tough middleweight, for what it's worth...

I'm quite pleased at the turnout here. I would have never expected so much feedback, so thank you all. From the comments, I think it is safe to assume that Cerdan didn't have a top-10 caliber career at 160, though his talent was on par, or near par with guys of that stature. This makes it hard to determine where exactly he falls in the grand scheme of things, but burt bienstock's contemporary knowledge and the opinions of others who viewed him in person weighs heavily on me. The 40's was an excellent era, especially for 160-pounders, so for many to be impressed by Marcel--again, when there were so many impressive fighters around--means a good deal.

just as I put up a list for Monzon, I always think a fighters Top 10 opponents and top opponents lists are helpful, so here you go...

these are Cerdan's Top Names - Champions, Contenders, Fringe Contenders and top noted fighters.

    *** Disclaimer ***

as we ALL Know, American fighters swam in deeper waters GENERALLY SPEAKING, BUT it IS Both WRONG & INSULTING to Boxing History and the fighters, to think that a small number of Foreign Fighters weren't also Capable TOP Men who Could, DID and Would swim just fine in the same pools. - They WERE!!!

I might be wrong about some of these classifications, but for the most part fairly close I think. Fighters that were all Top or Noted men, and of course some of them great.

this is PURELY for discussion and interest in fighters placements in the big scheme - as WE DO for Hundreds of fighters...

I Pray, Dear God, that "the Maestro" doesn't have an Aneurism and just see's it as interest, understanding (right or wrong), and informative (for the most part), enjoyment!

    Please God.

    Great stuff, burt. :good
    AN ACTUAL EYEWITNESS.
Worth as much as anything said earlier in the thread about this fight, and worth MORE than most of it.

Unfortunately, klompton's response to this is - (and I'm not mischaracterising him, because he's done it several times) - .. is to call burt a LIAR and tell burt he is not 80-something years old at all.

I'm not saying this to open old wounds at all.
Just illustrating an example of the constant selective and agenda-driven bias that klompton denies.
(Not to mention how personally insulting to burt, and uncalled for, it is.)

Klomp, from what you've seen, what would be the best footage skillwise you've seen of Lamotta? He looked good in the Tommy Bell fight. If this is not his best filmed display, is it close? Thanks.

I don't agree with your A list classification and you know to what I am referring but I won't muddy the waters by being more specific. Who the Maestro is, or what his opinion will be I have no idea.

I'd put Gilroy in an "A+" class myself.

Klompton, we all agree that you are the greatest researcher in the history of research, but do you have to be such an ass?

I've considered buying your Greb book before, but every time I see a post like this I decide not to.
