If someone were able to see Greb on film, I doubt he would look as good as Cerdan looks...But the records tell me that Greb fought everyone...Cerdan? Notsomuch...IMO Greb would mug him...
Over 6, 8 or even 10 rounds, I would go for Greb, but over 15 rounds I think Cerdan could win on points.
Greb beat better fighters than Cerdan. Cerdan never beat anyone close to being as good as Greb. Greb UD 15.
While facing very tough opposition throughout his career, Harry Greb compiled one of the most impressive records in boxing history. Yes, Cerdan had an impressive win-loss record, but his opposition was very soft overall. In addition, Greb was bigger, quicker and a much more versatile than Cerdan. As a result, I think that Greb would win handily in a bout with Cerdan. - Chuck Johnston
Greb beat everyone, true. But he did have a few fair losses in there as well. I dont think at least one loss to Cerdan would look totally out of place on Greb's ledger.
I saw Marcel Cerdan fight ringside. A terrific fighter alongst with Tony Zale, and Jake LaMotta of those times, but what I have read and absorbed what Harry Greb ACCOMPLISHED in his fabulous career makes be believe these 3 were 2nd raters compared to the Iron City Express...Greb, well rested and in his prime was most likely the greatest P4P fighter ever. Not pretty to watch, but effective as hell...Any middleweight who could repeatedly beat LHS like Gene Tunney, Jack Dillon, Tommy Gibbons, Tommy Loughran. Maxie Rosenbloom, and at the end of his career whip a prime tough Toy Bulldog Mickey Walker, is UNO #1 in my eyes...And with but one eye to boot..
Greb, probably a Martian, but truly his resume was the most spectacular in boxing history. My dad saw Harry but once when he trounced a much heavier [12 pounds] lightheavy, Gene Tunney in 1922 and from that night on said he was the best fighter he ever saw....Years later when my dad and I saw Sugar Ray Robinson at his best, and wow was he great, I would ask my dad who would have won if they met at their primes. GREB, he would always say vehemently...Years later at a boxing seminar in New England I and a few guys cornered Ruby Goldstein who once was a great LW punching prospect who was ruined by Ace Hudkins, then became a famous referee. I asked Ruby this question. "Ruby, who would have won in a bout between Harry Greb, and Ray Robinson ? Goldstein replied, "it would be like a man against a boy ". I said who was the man ? He replied Harry Greb...For what it's worth...
There is no doubt that Greb has the better carreer. And also no doubt that Cerdan would not repeat what Greb did. But, the point i made, is that a Cerdan victory would not look out of place on Greb's resume, given Grebs schedule and other factors. Do you (and others) agree with this?
I saw Cerdan fight and I rate him very highly as a MW. Any top fighter of one era might beat a great from another era, but I don't see a Cerdan beating a "rested" Harry Greb. Some posters claim that Greb had close decision fights in his career. Yes, but tell me what MW you know can have 300 bouts, against many heavier great LHs, and fighting every 10 DAYS or so, with many wear and tear injuries that had not time to heal, and still compile such a magnificent resume that culminated with a terrific victory over a prime alltime great MW Mickey Walker in a faded one eyed Greb's 295th or so bout just before Greb retired ? If Harry Greb wasn't a wonder as a fighter, then pray tell who was. ?
I do. Cerdan looks pretty good here imo ,these guys aren't world beaters but decent fighters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eraWfq8Z-4
