Okay, So I've been watching footage of Marcel Cerdan recently. He looked particularly against Zale, and showed some really good offensive skills in addition to power. Brutal end. How do we all rate him? Who's the best Welterweight or Middleweight you could see him beating in a fantasy match-up? Any opinions on this fighter are welcome.
It's CeRdan. Only fought the 'best' when they were long in the tooth. I actually expected a more conventional boxer puncher type so when I was first saw him barge through Zale I was surprised. I see him ranked in top 100 P4P lists and top 10 middleweight lists too much for my liking. So I'd say he was overrated, even if he may well have gone on to prove himself more if he hadn't died.
Someone who was a star and died young will always rank high. He looks good on film, but his resume isn't that impressive to me.
Yeah I don't think he looks better than 'very good' either. Les Darcy is similarly overrated. Good fight actually, Cerdan Vs Darcy, who takes it?
No, I was being serious. I was thinking to myself the other day about a few fighters that rarely get mentioned, and those were the top three I thought of.
No way mate! The top 3 rarely mentioned fighters are Ho Joo, Ray Minus and Hitler The Killer obviously.
I saw Marcel Cerdan in his first fight in America against the tough Georgie Abrams at MSG. The year was 1946 and Cerdan won a tough decision over Georgie Abrams, who was good enough to draw with Charley Burley....Cerdan was 30 years old in 1946, was on the downside after spending his prime years as a WW in Europe during WW2...A very strong heavy handed swarmer Marcel was, who would certainly have been a MW champ today ...
and then Burt as he was... people forget Cerdan was near the end of his peak too. Born in 1916, Zale in 1913, Williams in 1915, LaMotta 1922, these guys were all in their last years, 1-3 years isn't anything to moan about except at the end of fighters careers and Cerdan was too. Also Nat Fliescher was shouting about him as early as 1939 when he seen him live in Europe, yes it is in the Ring, the War and world crisis is what prevented him from getting states side sooner. Cerdan is one of the greatest fighters in history and fit for any MW that ever lived.
Great well-balanced offensive fighter-lovely two fisted attack- though i found his approach quite one-dimensional.More of a punching machine than a well-rounded boxerpuncher, as he didn't seem to have much of a reverse gear. Looks better physically in the earlier footage and was probably at his best as a Welter.
