Better fighter AT THAT TIME but not over their whole careers or peak v peak. The thrilla was a better fight IMO.
Ha ha ha ha! Arthur Mercante gave r9 to Frazier. The other 2 gave it to Ali. Yourself, an upfront Ali-hater, gave it even. Well lets play a game. Lets say Mercante DID give the 9th to Ali (i know its hypothetical), his final tally would have been 7-7-1...a draw, which means Joe still would have won the fight with a majority decision. Now im not shitting on Joe here, but its been pretty much recognised as being Joes prime whereas its equally been recognised that Ali was past prime. Then we have one of the finest referees of the day being a hairs breadth away from calling it a draw. And you think peak for peak joe wins everytime. I suggest peak for peak Ali would have either convincingly beat joe on points (like he DID in 74) or he would have stopped him (like he DID in 75, and was about to in 74 only for Perez saving joe, the film dont lie)
Frazier wasnt prime id say 69- early 71 was prime. 75 was stopped due to frazier being blind...... 74 there is no way pillow fists would have stopped frazier if foreman could knock frazier down multiple times before it was stopped. Holding behind the head is also cheating which helped him win. ali had better chin in 71 his so called peak was in the 60's frazier owuld have knocked him out or UD like it was in the 1st.
A case can be made for the Thrilla being a better fight, but that's only because both guys were nowhere near their best by then. March 1971, both were nearest their Peaks! Frazier was at his Peak, actually. Some may say Ali being out for three years was when he would have Peaked & I do agree with that to a certain degree. However, Ali was nearer his best in 1971 than 1975!
A great fight. Joe Frazier deserved the victory, his performance was simply staggering. I fear for Ali when I actually watch this fight. Every left hook that Frazier threw looked like it would double an ordinary man over. How Ali rose from that left hook in the 15th with such ease is staggering. The measure of the man, really. Ali handled his business in the rematches, but this was Frazier's night.
This is worth repeating. :good My favorite boxing match of all time. To great, skilled athletes in their primes swapping punches for 15 rounds.... boxer vs swarmer, it had it all..
Just from a logical perspective, Ali wasn't. He was heavier in 1974, 1975 than in 1971, he wasn't as fast, his reflexes were not as sharp. If Ali had fought Foreman in 1971, there is no way that version of Ali would have stayed on the Ropes & taken so much punishment!
Why do people say Muhammad Ali was in his prime in 1971? He had fought two times in three years, and just put on a sub-par performance against Bonavena? He was still very good, but he wasn't prime, and I fear the only reason we have people saying he was is to appease Joe Frazier.
Joe Frazier's peak. ABC Superstars Competition...............'Smokin Joe Don't Float' Second place for the military press..............OUCH!!!! 160 lbs.
