id like to hear what you guys think as im sure there are many fights that have been great since then like corrales castillo and hearns hagler etc etc etc . For me being an 11 yr old kid on that night and having had a great passion for the sweet science already it was like something out of a comic book and for me it has to be the greatest fight of my generation and this one as well:good
The Match that got me into boxing was Ward Gatti 2. Then I saw Ward GAtti1. I was instantly a ward nuthugger from then on!
I was ringside at Madison Square Garden that night. I can still feel the electricity. Think Pacquiao X's 5.
Wow, were you really ringside for that one? Thats amazing and is a memory I'd love to have. What was the hype like around that fight...I imagine it'd like De La Hoya-Mayweather, Lewis-Tyson and Tyson-Holyfield all put together.
The fight Lived up to expectation, And that Expectation was Global, the Anticipation was electric, People in Shops, School Kids, on the busses and Trains, it seemed that the whole world, Fight Fan and General Joe Public reaching fever pitch for this one, Ali-Foreman Tyson-Holyfield did not have nearly the same expectation as Ali and Holyfield were ancticipated to go down to quick defeats, But Ali - Frazier 1st was a 50-50 fight, with ywo grat undefeated champions, That Pre-fight Magic has never really been recaputured, - Leonard - Duran and Leonard-Hearns did have good expectations.
This is a very subjective and individual topic, everyone will have a different favourite fight for different reasons .. The very best fight ive ever seen is Wilfredo Gomez v Lupe Pintor, that was carnage, what a fight that was .. Everytime i watch it im shaking my head, thats the ultimate fight for me ..
Erik Morales vs Marco Antonio Barrera I is still the greatest fight I have ever seen, too bad I didn't know it was going on. I was 11.
Where you really there JG? your a lucky man. not only was it FOTC but it had to be up there in the Events of the century (sportswise of course). A guy i know fought Alis brother on the undercard. Imagine being able to claim that you beat Ali at Madison square garden ha! ok, so its a trick question but it was funny when i first heard it. That must have been a dream for yourself as im sure getting ringside would have been just for a priviliged few. May i be real nosey and ask where you involved in any way or was it ringside seats. Either way im really intrigued as i love to hear stories from the guys who were around the fights and fighters from back in the day. Much respect JG
I got into boxing as a kid in 1963-1964......the fight of my lifetime was also Ali-Frazier 1 in 1971...it was talked about and discussed by fight fans and non fans alike....when it was over local and national TV and radio broke in with the decision as a NEWS FLASH.. ...this was news....
Biggest fight of my lifetime J.G. Nothing..even vintage Tyson fights have compared to it since then. People who never gave boxing any thought in their lives that I knew were talking about it. There was like a hum in the air almost (lol) on the actual day of that fight. I also won a bet being for Joe Frazier.
