The thing that gets me regarding this fight is that Marciano didn't even want to fight it. People that don't like Marciano use this as an example of him fighting over-the-hill fighters - even though the way Walcott's career panned out doesn't really fit the facts regarding this. The thing to remember is Louis placed himself in Marciano's way, it was never something Marciano wanted.
I Think he would have ko'd him. Some say the last thing you lose is a punch, but it's harder to get your punches off when you get older. A prime Louis would not have had this problem. His timing would have been better. Marciano was knocked down by Light Heavyweight Archie Moore and JJ Walcott. I think Joe could have kept him down.
And how many would have he missed? You guys prolly should remember I think Louis was the best HW ever.... just to give a heads up. The Louis Marciano fought should likely have lost far sooner than he did.
But in all fairness to Rocky, both of those knockdowns were flash knockdowns and he got up both times as if nothing had happened. Check the fights they are both on YouTube. Also, Moore was a light heavyweight but he just happens to have the most KOs ever for any fighter. So it is no surprise that he could time an opponent and put him down. The effects of the knockdowns are more a reflection on how good Marciano's chin was and like I said watch them, it was like nothing had happened, he just carried on his business as before.
Joe wasn't a complete palooka, but he was washed up. I would not count this as one of the Rock's best wins.
It's always a little silly to look at the Marciano/Louis fight in any regard. Marciano didn't want to fight it, and Louis wasn't as good as he once was. Prime vs Prime between the two would have amounted to two of the greats going at it toe to toe... nobody ever got to see that one - and that's the end of the matter from a Marciano, and Louis, fan.
Who do you have for a top ten HW list then? If you've not done one it's OK, I was just curious as to your thoughts. (I did notice you don't post all that often on here - which tells me you aren't just a guy wanting a rise out of another poster) Pat
I've never really done one: Of the top of my head, I may change this with more thought: Ali Louis Johnson Holmes Marciano Foreman Lewis Liston Dempsey Frazier
Marciano cops some **** for beating such a loved figure, and great fighter. Holmes copped **** for doing the same to Ali. Tyson didn't cop it for beating Holmes because Holmes was, to say the least, not exactly the most popular of public figures.
I think this is a fair list! I don't know/haven't seen a lot of Johnson. Dempsey is a bit of an enigma in different areas, to me. Anyway, thanks for sharing your list with us!
The Holmes' mouth created more for him than anything else. I still like the guy, and what he SO obviously accomplished, but he could have learned the art of public speaking a bit better
