The closest Ali came to fighting Marciano was Frazier but Rocky had 2 hands and the closest he came to fight Ezzard Charles was Doug Jones...the closest he came to fighting Walcott was Jimmy Young but Jimmy could not hit near like Jersey Joe...Still Ali was an all-time great as was Marciano..no one knows for sure what would happen but I can tell you with 2 winners like that in the same ring it would be a hell of a battle and Ali was a smart boxing man and around some solid boxing people, Dundee, etc. He knew a tough guy when he saw one and he experienced it first hand in the ring.
Ali - at his absolute best - would beat Marciano, in my opinion. Less than his best, and he would probably lose. He had the movement, reach, speed, chin, stamina, and intelligence to beat the Rock. This wouldn't be a fight he could rest in, he would need to be moving all night, only planting to throw combinations.
Bingo. exactly my thoughts. Great fighter that marciano is, i just cant see him beating Ali P4P. Too small and too light plus, with alis superior footwork, he'll have to try and catch him also IMO
You mean the old Cruiserweights who Ko'd all the Big men of the times yes ...but I think Ali would be a good judge of various styles and does not give praise to easily
Jack Demposey of Toledo would beat Rocky Marciano every day of the week...Virtualy every boxing expert who saw the two in their primes, picked The Manassa Mauler, over Marciano[as I do], because Dempsey hit so much faster, long range, or in close, was just as strong, and had a better defense than Rocky...SPEED KILLS,says it all.....
This thread has been going on for a long time now, so I'm probably not adding anything new, but here goes. I really can't see Marciano getting a win over a prime Ali.. For all of his strengths and qualities, the Rock simply would not be bringing anything to the table that Ali either had or would experience in his career.. Rocky certainly would not hit Ali with the hardest punch that he had ever taken... He would not be the fastest, biggest, strongest or most skilled fighter he ever fought either.. Marciano had an undying work eithic and will to win, but so did a few guys that Ali faced... For example, can anyone see Marciano getting off the canvas 6 times against George Foreman the way that Joe Frazier did? I don't know if I can .... Frankly, after watching Joe Walcott box a masterful fight against Marciano for most of 13 rounds, before finally being stopped, I just can't see why Muhammad Ali couldn't do better...
Take that same JJWalcot and put him in with Foreman and we may see the Jimmy Young fight, only Walcott hit much harder then Young Styles make fight, who would ever think the fighter that got dropped and hurt badly by Henry Cooper and given a rough fight by Doug Jones would be able to handle Foreman and Liston What made Frazier a much tougher, life and death battle with Ali and Frazier hurt Ali badly in the 11th and dropped in the 15th.of fight 1, I think it was pressure, relentlessness and the condition to be able to fight at that pace. Although IMO, Frazier never quite got himself back to the form of fight 1, he was still formidable.
Ali has to fight 3 minutes of every round against Marciano....something he rarely did.... No waving to the crowd...no Ali shuffle....no talking to Rocky in this fight....Marciano fought at a middleweights pace....The Rock gave you everything he had for 3 minutes of every round....he just kept coming.....he hurt you no matter where he hit you...and a myth has grown over the years that Ali was unhittable...he was not... Marciano had KO power in both fists...great stamina....heart....both had the ability to take a punch....this has always been my dream fight....I'll take Marciano over Ali...
