I knew Rex Layne - good guy, one time over beer and darts he said you were the human equal to a shrug and that you wouldn’t take this joke very well.
Layne was soft in the belly ,Goldman who managed Cesar Brion, who had fought Rex , knew this and told Marciano to target Layne's midsection to soften him up ,and he did it to perfection. I can take a joke ,when there is one to take.
Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if Marciano felt 'over trained' for many fights. From what I have read about him in a couple of books, during his career he basically trained constantly. I'm guessing that he felt that maintaining his discipline was essential to his success. But your body gets tired and so does your mind. I think that Marvin Hagler felt the same way- over trained- for the same reason and just accepted it as part of the price that had to be paid.
This … but I think with Rocky’s physical limitations he had to perpetually be honed to that razor’s edge to do what he did.
Hi Buddy. For context I have no horse in the race, also I don't favour one poster over the other, neither do I dislike any fighter over another, I try and have always tried to be impartial on the forum, whether that has been successful or not, I don't know, but what I will say to you is I have very recently read a book on Marciano, a very detailed and informative book, add to that I have also read numerous articles and stories about Walcott, Charles, and Louis, and to that end, I can say without prejudices all of what mcvey has said in his post on the fighters mentioned, I back wholeheartedly, I carry no torch for him , but he is very knowledgeable, is not a big head, and answers his critics in a civilised manner, that is to be commended, what's right is right, and you would do well to pause, and reflect. Please take this post in the manner it is meant, I respect your views and posts as I do every posters. stay safe Journeyman92, chat soon buddy. Mike.
Nope, @mcvey is a rude SOB just as often as me and if he has any shame he’d agree lol - I think Mac is correct too, he knows way more about classic boxing he’s got all the quotes on speed dial, I was slightly rustling his jimmy’s - I like Mac, Mac regularly teaches me about the sports history he’s a library, I have read his posts since I was in highschool and he definitely dislikes Marciano contrary to what he says.
My theory with feeling overtrained against Charles is this, I think Marciano was in great shape that he’d gone though the grind but was completely caught off guard on how good EC was that he blamed being overworked “no way was I getting beat up that bad after all that work, must’ve overdone it and lost a step” he would’ve felt a tier down from usual because he was facing a faded version of the GOAT.
One can not feel peak after a training camp. Once again as in the Lastarza post this is normal for fighters. There’s usually a week or two stretch that trainers try to time to get their man peak before a fight. It doesn’t mean he felt drained like many weight drainers feel but he prob didn’t feel at his peak. He obviously put on a show but it was the one title fight he had where he didn’t register a KO. Hard not to believe him.
