Banks landed a hell of a shot and Ali went down ,he got up and dropped Banks in the next round. I don't find any fault in Marciano being dropped by Walcott.it was a terrific left hook timed to perfection. I don't have double standards ,I'm objective about all fighters. Don't spit your dummy out yet again.
I'm pointing out that an 11 fight Marciano might just as easily have been dropped by that Banks punch. My other question was concerning your claims about Dempsey's fans.
I'm pointing out that an 11 fight Marciano might just as easily have been dropped by that Banks punch. No ,I think it remarkable that he got up so quickly.Walcott must have thought WTF?
Banks landed a hail mary shot that could have dropped just about anyone.Walcott could knock Ali down ,he probably hit as hard as Cooper.
All that yammering and you still haven't explained why it's unreasonable to think that Marciano would have h2h problems against prime top heavyweight punchers. Nothing in my posts "contradicts my own logic" or makes egregious claims. The problem is that you seem to wear rose-colored lenses when it comes to evaluating anyone who fought on black & white tv, and you suffer fits of hysteria whenever people say things about them that can be seen as less than flattering. More to the point though, you're an unpersuasive revisionist who misunderstands the nature of Marciano's greatness because you're unable to discern and accept any of his limitations and flaws.
Um, that's not the topic of the discussion. The thing we've been talking about the last few pages, is the quality of this thread. Which is pure trash. Your argument is vague, less than half baked, and worst of all, inaccurate. We have not been talking about Rocky against ATG punchers. And you don't seem able to follow the argument. This is some serious projecting.
I'm sorry I misinterpreted your intention. The honest answer is that every fighter faces advsersity. And every great puncher has let people slip through that on paper they shouldn't have.
Walcott did fairly well vs Marciano not because he hit hard. He did well because he was an excellent boxer. Any one punch from most any top five hwt can knock any other hwt down if timed right. Using a single knockdown to extrapolate any factual conclusion is beyond ridiculous.
Coming back to win in a very tough fight against top opposition is criteria of all time greatness. If Rocky was never knocked down and koed Walcott easily in fight one he would actually lower his ranking as an all time great
No you are silly. ATG characteristics must be proven. Coming back to win in a losing fight against the reigning hwt champion is the type performance historians look for when looking to classify a fighter as an ATG. Not many hwts have the fortitude to exhibit these characteristics.
Getting back to the premise of the thread, Rocky does deserve much respect. He maximized his potential and beat everyone put in front of him. He passed every test he faced. It is pretty high praise when one's detractors must often rely on time travel and fanciful speculation by cherry picking events from the entirety of the hypothetical combatants' careers to support their conclusions. Nevermind, this is often the domain of those passionate, self riteous experts who couldn't reliably handicap today's contests. It is not reasonable to expect that Rocky would enjoy the same success against the elite super heavyweights of today. So what?! They didn’t exist! How bizarre would it be to say to any of today's top athletes " you wouldn't stand a chance against the guy I imagine may be coming after your lifetime!?" H2H predictions are unprovable and often cloud the the fighters real story.
