Only amateurs like yourself talk about size. Marciano proved he was an ATG by coming back to win against top opposition. Jeffries did the same.
Coming back to beat Walcott is all about all time greatness. However Walcott was not an ATG hwt. What Jeffries may or may not have done in imaginary bouts is your speculation. We do know under horrific conditions against top opposition some of which were all time greats he prevailed. Without these type wins Jeffries nor Marciano would be called an ATG.
Corbett and Fitzsimmons were ATG fighters and both were past hwt champions. Walcott may have been larger but he was not nor has he ever been considered an ATG. Only amateurs like yourself point to Size as a criteria for all time greatness. Corbett, Fitz and Jeffries would have beaten Walcott quite decisively.
Well that's your opinion and your entitled to it, but the last part of your comment is one of the most illogical and baseless comments I've read on this site. To say a small boxer puncher with slow feetl l ike Louis, and a even smaller face first slugger like Marciano style is better suited for todays game ( well maybe they would be ok in today's game because most can't fight) Lets say time period between the late 60'sto the late 90's/early 2000's To say Louis who didn't have the greatest chin mind you or a Marciano short, easy to hit, cut easy, against Ali at 6'3" 210-215 who moved like a middleweight and in prime almost inpossible to land on cleanly to say Louis and Marciano would some how be better suited against some of the giants of the last 20 yrs is insane in my opinion.
I personally don't see them beating him decisively if at all actually. But that's another conversation. Kevin, I understand your points, and they aren't unreasonable to degree. The biggest issue I see with your premise put forth about Walcott, and how it relates to how Rocky wouls do against others; it's dependant on us accepting that Walcott had skills at or below most SHW level, and thus of course they could land at hurt Rocky. I think even you can see fault in such a premise. Walcott was an excellent counter puncher, with pretty good pop, and quick reflexes. He set up his foes better than most HW's and SHW, that have existed. The punch he landed on Rocky, was set up and had perfect timing. That isn't just replicated with ease. Anyways, that said, there are other reasons big hws could give Rocky problems as you illustrated.
If the criteria that you use to assess greatness lead you to conclude that winning a fight after suffering a knockdown and falling behind on the cards against an opponent is more impressive than dominating that opponent and knocking him out easily, then you need to reconsider your criteria ASAP.
More arrogance from someone who obviously has never boxed. I recall similar aloofness from another member...Houdini. Maybe Perry can explain why he changed usernames.
Again.....coming from behind to win against tough competition under tough conditions is criteria for all time greatness. It's what historians look for in a fighter. It proves said fighter has that something special intestinal fortitude that separates the good from the great. Unfortunately you are too inexperienced to understand this premise as you are concerning most topics regarding this sport.
Your first mistake is gravitating to size at every turn. A true sign of a complete amateur. The conditions that fighters fought during the late 1800s/early 1900s were conducive for smaller men doing well vs larger opponents. Very large ring size and incredibly quick canvases made finding a quick opponent very difficult. Walcott although an excellent technician was not very durable. His lack of durability is one reason all time greatness is not typically connected to his name.
Of course if you outclass and dominate your opponent, you don't have to gradually grind him down. Who says the canvasses were "incredibly quick ? "Jeffries complained about at least two ring surfaces being unreliable and slow.. Walcott wasn't very durable ,was Corbett anymore durable, he was ko'd by a body shot from a 167lbs man? What are Corbett's best wins? He had 20 fights and won just 11 of them.
