    1. Running fast while clearing obstacles....doesn't sound like it would hurt sprinting speed to me. Owens' methods were not so inferior if they included sprint-training (short and longer sprints, as modern sprinters do) and jump-training (long jump) but excluded weights. Weight training is a rather recent addition to sprint training--it helps, but most of the advances in speed were made before its arrival.

    2. That was the amateur world record. Professionals (which is essentially what modern sprinters are) posted faster times. Seward did 9.4 seconds in the 100 yards, for instance.

    3. The track and field histories I have read say that the tracks make a big difference. The track and field athletes I've spoken to agreed. There was even someone on this thread who had done track and field and said the same thing. I've run on grass (as some guys did even earlier, around Sullivan's time), on dirt, and on a modern track, and the modern track is easier.

Yes, I agree that this would confer an advantage if he could move his longer legs proportionately as fast. Unfortunately, since efficiency decreases with size, he would not be able to do that.

I believe it was China_Hand_Joe who made this argument.

He seems to do that in every response he makes, the same happens about a million times earlier when he does the same with me and powerpuncher.

As long as you seem to have a problem with me--read the quoted material you will see that I was responding in my early responses to China Hand Joe. I only responded to your assertion that a 200 lb man who Lewis fought had to be in good shape--they might not be carrying a lot of weight but they is not necessarily the same as being in good boxing shape.
Also, Joe brought up the claim that Marciano's opponents were out of shape. He should provide proof.

Anyway, this has been a fun and informative debate with different people bringing varied perspectives. There have been a great many posts. Perhaps I got confused here and there about who said what, but this should be just fun. Anyway, I apologize if I accused you of saying something you did not say. Don't forget, I am no longer a young man.

It's pretty obvious that the rock's biggest name opponent was hardly in bad shape as well, i never seen anyone imply that joe louis was in bad shape. It's pretty easy to see that the older fighter's in general had better conditioning, however to make a fair comparison you do have to compare like for like, and fighters such as dempsey, louis, johnson etc should more be compared with guys like cunningham, haye and mormeck of todays era as they are of a more simular size.
