What is this forums obsession with putting down Rocky Marciano? It is unhealthy to hate someone you never met so much.
What is the obsession with attributing skills to him he never possessed ie clever defence ,good balance, great chin.? If fan boy posters didn't lick his arse at every possible opportunity, maybe the more objective posters would leave him alone more?
The excuse for not fighting a number one ranked contender, because in someone's opinion you would win easily doesn't cut it. If it did Marciano v Cokkell would never have taken place! We have seen many fighters fall apart after one loss and never be the same again .To accurately assess a fighter you refer to his current form not what he may have done earlier, nor what he might do in the future! Marciano not defending against Valdes is no reflection on Marciano's courage, though it may well be a reflection of Al Weill's courage and cynicism. GP you need to stop digging now!
Nino lost to light heavy Harold Johnson 11/24/52 UD then lost to Archie Moore UD 3/11/53 then dropped a decision to Billy Gilliam 4/20/53 and Bob Baker 5/21/53 -so 4 in a row he finished 53 well but had a controversial SD win over Archie McBride ( who he had previously lost to ) Even though Archie Moore being Light heavyweight Champion was rated at heavyweight he was the most deserving and dangerous challenger. In the meantime Charles had won 9 in a row before losing to as boxrec described as an obscure Nino Valdes in Cuba - the unofficial UP had the fight 5-3-2 for Valdes but Charles claimed he came in overweight and wanted a rematch outside of Miami (little Havana) -Bobby Gleason -Valdes manager declined- Charles also lost a controversial SD to Harold Johnson but most felt Charles won - In the 9 fight leading to the 2 losses Charles defeated Bernie Reynolds-Cesar Brion-Jimmy Bivins-Rex Layne and Valdes conqueror Billy Gilliam - then Charles had 2 explosive wins over Coley Wallace (who was coming off a TKO win over Billy Gilliam) and then Charles KO'd Bob Satterfield (who had just KO'D 2 fights earlier (Valdes conqueror) Bob Baker in 1 rd. Satterfield had won 4 ko's in row when he fought Charles. In the meantime Archie Moore from 11/15/48 to 9/21/55 Archie Had 55 fights only losing one disqualification and a controversial loss to Harold Johnson that he avenged 2X last by tko (impressive) In those 53 wins Archie beat the likes of Jimmy Bivins 2x by KO- Bob Satterfield- Phil Muscato KO- Alberto Lovell-Joey Maxim- Clarence Henry -Bob Baker by KO- Bert Whitehurst TKO and he beat He beat Nino Valdes 2 times If Al Weil/Rocky did slight anyone when Marciano took the fight against Don Cokell while waiting for the elimination fight between Archie Moore and Nino Valdes 5/2/55 it was the light heavyweight Champion Archie Moore who was the most deserving Challenge as the public knew although Moore was still light heavyweight champ (Moore had to go back down in weight toKO BoBo Olson 6/22/55 before challenging Marciano 9/21/55 Valdes was a good fighter as were many of that time but in the small window on paper during that time he was overshadowed by the outspoken and more deserving light heavyweight Champion Archie Moore who was on a 53 fight roll and had already beaten Valdes and Baker and top names in both divisions Valdes was given another chance to fight Marciano directly after his loss to Moore in a fight against Bob Satterfield on 8/17/55 - Valdes was dropped in the final round by Bob S and lost a UD With no $ fights available and problems with Weil Marciano retired 49-0 43 ko's _ I wish Valdes would have beaten Satterfield because I don't believe Valdes would have stood much of a chance and 50-0 with 44 ko's would have been a nice cherry on the cake of Marciano who fought all colors - styles and like mcvey said "the best of his times -what more could you ask."
Jaco was a journeyman whose results never indicated he could beat Marciano anyone with half a brain knows this. I think you just started a stir the **** thread to keep the pot boiling about Marciano,so , since nobody else was biting ,I thought I'd oblige you.
The fight wasn't particularly close, the score cards were,7-12,5-3,5-3 and the AP scored it 5-3-2 Valdes.By this win ,and going 10-0 in his next ten fights, beating no8 Neuhaus and no 8 Harrison, Valdes became the number one contender its that simple. And no amount of wriggling and deliberate obfuscation is going to alter that! For the record I think Marciano beats Valdes convincingly but that is beside the point.
Lmao cmon Mcvey his chin was solid and defensively he didn’t look great but it was obviously affective . Fighters have been quoted as to saying how difficult he was to hit cleanly. I wish a proper punch stat was done on him so we can compare him to other champs. Think you would be shocked (I’ve heard there are stats out there I just can’t find em...heard maybe Ali boxing by the numbers has it but not 100 percent).
The great Dave Jaco hammers the sort, limited, stubby, light punching, t-rexed armed bleeder until the referee mercifully intervenes....probably, the torture would be over by round 6.
Do you think Valdes should have gotten the title match before Archie Moore who beat Valdes 2X in the same time period you are speaking of and had 53 wins ? Archie was Light heavyweight Champ in this time but still beat Baker- Nino and Satterfield and had 53 wins in a row against a DQ loss and a disputed loss to Harold Johnson, followed by a KO win over Johnson and Baker who both beat Valdes - just because Moore was not in the heavyweight ratings was still the most dangerous and deserving challenger IMO Do you think Valdes should have got a shot before Moore? or do you think the elimination fight to fight for the title was fair?
Yes he had a good chin, but not a great one as his is often referred to. Walcott said he wasnt hard to hit, but he was difficult to hit in vulnerable places.I was referring to him being described as clever defensively which is how I've seen him spoken of.
